I just need a good card that will accept the ADAT output of my Focusrite Octopre. I've got a Delta 1010lt, so I don't need anything else. An affordable ADAT In is ALL I need. I'm using Cubase SX if anyone needs to know. Thanks for your help guys! Gordon

I am using a RME hammerfall hdsp 9632.. it has more than just ADAT tho.. i really like it.. it costs about 800$ (can). i use it with the m audio octane.. sounds good to me.

Also check out the RME 9652, or the Steinberg one, which costs less. three ADAT in/outs (24 channels at 44.1/48), Wordclock, SPDIF, and a price of around $550

Yeah, I was definitely hoping for something more in the Terratec's price range. Is there anything to fear with a cheaper card like that? I would assume that the sonic impact would be minimal given the fact that the digital conversion is taking place outside of the card/computer. Why are the other digital cards so expensive? Do they really have a huge effect on sound?

Terratec EWS88D

...has ADAT I/O, plus an analog O, and S/PDIF. You can put up to 4 in a computer (they come with linking cables for word clock synch) and support from Terratec in my experience has been very friendly. The manual, however is in "Berlin English"; but it's all simple enough to set up. I paid just over $100 apiece for the last 2 I bought.

If you only need a good and reliable card with single ADAT-i/o there's really no reason to get anything fancier or more expensive than the EWS88D. It's really a good card and does what it's suppossed to do very well. Atleast I've never heard anything bad about it nor had any problems myself with the one I had in my PC before the RME Digi9652 currently in it.

Well, awesome. How/where did you get them for just over a hundred bucks? Terratec can't be the only people covering this niche of the market, what other companies make cards like this in this price range??

So if you're using one of those cards, where does the digital-analog conversion for monitoring etc. take place - do you need another outboard convertor, or just feed into a regular soundcard?

I was just going to monitor through my Delta 1010lt. Is this advisable? I don't imagine any problems, but some might see this as a convoluted setup.

Well for ScienceOne's use .... he has the Octopre which is an 8 channel preamp that has the A/D D/A built into it. It's signals are transfered via ADAT.
There are many 8 channel preamps out now that offer ADAT connectivity, though in his case the 1010 doesn't offer ADAT I/O so he needs an interface such as the ones listed to utilize the ADAT I/O of the Octopre.
In essence, using the ADAT interface and the 8 channel ADAT preamp, he is basically adding a second 8 channel soundcard to his setup.

Hope this clears things up for you.

-Edit to add- monitoring can be had from either the 1010 or one of the 8 channel ADAT preamps. Provided, of course, that the preamp offers ADAT IN and analog out.

A problem with ASIO though, you can't have two different card drivers!

Odd that there isn't an ADAT Delta card. The DIO2496 is discontinued and only did stereo s/pdif on the optical.

Is anyone successfully mixing Terratec and Delta cards? Reason I ask is that they use the same Envy24 audio chip, and there could be driver conflicts?

So the Octopre does D-A as well as A-D?

I'm pretty sure that it does not. It's just a preamp. However, if someone wants to disprove me and make my day, go ahead. Make it.

dont forget the e-mu 1212m

199 bucks, ADAT, has a firewire out (extra benefit for my older comp.) and plenty of analogue ins and outs as well ...

a very reasonable package, i would say.

Soooo.....
Does that mean if you use an Octopre/ADAT for recording, additional outboard D-A converters are required for monitoring?

After looking at the Octopre ...... Yes, if those where the only items you had to make up your interface, You would need an additional D/A converter for monitoring. The Octopre only has A/D converters.

Not that I would recommend a Behringer ADA8000 over an Octopre, but the Berry has A/D D/A.
