Well, it happened. I fired up the XT for the first time in a while. At first, everything was great. Then the intermittent Error 07 flash. Then full on Error 07 meltdown. When I first press play, the counter starts rolling but the error immediately pops up. The tracks might play for a while but then the first 4 or 5 will drop out. I cleaned the headstack and checked the plugs but it didn't help. Does anyone know how to differentiate a head misalignment from a head chip failure? Considering I still get a few tracks playing, I wouldn't necessarily think it is the chip. Then again, I don't know too much about the subject :(
Thanks in advance :)

been awhile since i thought about it... benn almost 10 yrs since i had any... but as i remember it it always came down to cleaning or shitty tapes... are you sure you know the way to clean it?? doing it wrong can do much more harm than good...

I followed the procedure everyone describes online. Lint free cloth, 99% alcohol (91% was the best I could find), very light pressure, turn rotary head counter clockwise. There was quite a bit of dirt on the cloth. Didn't help the error though. I tried several tapes including a new one. I guess I need to check and see if it is 4 tracks that drop out or 5. 4 would sound like a problem with a single head.
