I have an ADA8000 A/D converter and a DMX6 fire 24/96 sound card....how do I get their optical Outputs/inputs to communicate? Is there something software based that I can use to convert from adat to s/pdif or a cheap hardware based converter i can use? I'm kinda stuck in a rut right now

You can't!
The optical input on the Terratec is only for TOSLink S/PDIF.
S/PDIF is only two channels (stereo - left and right).
The ADA8000 is 8 channels of ADAT optical.
They are two totally different formats. Even if you can find a format converter, you will have the 8 channels of ADAT summed to 2 channels of S/PDIF.

The only budget option is finding a used M-Audio S.A.M. (they no longer in production).... this unit allowed you transfer pairs of ADAT tarcks 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 over to 2ch S/PDIF... it even lets you mix the 8 ADAT tracks digitally.

If budget isn't a concern then there are units from Z-Sys and Mutec that will do this type of conversion....

Or .... you may be able to pick up the Terratec EWS88 D for around $200 US.
I would assume that it would play along with the unit you have (don't quote me on that) as a digital expansion card. You may have to sync them via wordclock.
Most places have stopped carrying them in favor of units that offer all the I/O options in one unit.
This place lists them or you could try eBay.
This would allow you to retain all 8 ADAT channels in to the computer without having to sum them all to 2 channels of S/PDIF or only converting 2 ADAT channels to S/PDIF.
A Frontier Design Wavecenter card would also be an alternative, yet it runs just under $300 and I would think that two Terratec cards would play together better than mixed brands.

In short .... you are looking at more hardware or replacing your existing interface with one that offers ADAT optical I/O.

Sorry for posting so late, but the E-MU 1212 is the same price as the Terratec, it has ADAT switchable to S/PDIF, also has firewire, 2 1/4in bal. inputs, and other stuff. Probably a better buy.
