ad hoc - adverb & adjective - For this particular purpose; special(ly). [Latin]

Yo Honolulululu:

Ad Hoc also precedes the word COMMITTEE, many committees. Any committee was anathama to me when I taught college.

Use of Ad Hoc in college could easily mean WASTE OF TIME.

I was a grad student at CMU [Central Michigan U.] and I got chummy with a secretary in the English department. Since I was curious, I asked her how many committees there were organized at CMU that, possibly, a teacher could serve? She told me in a week that there were 110 committees.

Someday I'll write a song about college committees.

Sorry to digress but you did ask for a definition, any definition.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for not being more specific, I wrote my post pretty late. I assumed since I posted my question in the recording techniques forum, you guys would know that my question applies to recording. :) My question should've read, "what is ad hoc and how does it relate to recording?"

I wasn't quite asking for definition, I thought it might've been an acronym or something. I didn't think of looking it up in a dictionary. I thought ad hoc was one of those buzz-jargon-lingo-words that gets used in recording talk that I never heard of. Reason why I asked, is that I came across this word in some magazine articles and posts I read on RAP.

Here are some of the usages I've seen:

"Although ADR is difficult with experienced actors and crew, it's even harder when you have to do it ad-hoc..." (BTW I do know what ADR is and what is stands for)

"P5-100's are marginal for doing digital recording under
ad-hoc setup and usage..."--discussing recording with computers

"this kind of use only occurs in old or ad hoc PA setups..."--discussing passive DI boxes.

"There was so much bleed between the ad hoc control room and the performance space..."

So....with the above examples what was meant by "ad hoc/ad-hoc?"

Thanks again guys.

???

We're a little behind here in Honolulu. I'm still trying to get over the can-attached-to-can-with-string trick which makes a magic talking device. Actually, I'm having someone translate for me. I dictate and she types.

translater no type now. me haku talk now. me haku type. me type very slow. coconut tree sway in wind 30 times now. me haku like magic stick with rope to magic box. haku say words. coconut tree sway 1 time. magic box say what haku say. magic box sound like haku. magic box devil magic. translate woman tell haku not devil magic. me no understand. body cover itchy on round high leg. haku go now.

Hello again, this is the translator speaking on Haku's behalf. Allow me to translate what Haku was trying to say.

Haku wanted the opportunity to speak for himself in his own words. Haku is an incompetent keyboard typist. It took Haku about 30 minutes to type the first 4 sentences. Haku has become quite enthralled with recording and hearing himself when played back. (Haku doesn't grasp the concept of time of minutes into seconds. He only understands minutes and roughly measures time by how many time the palm tree sways.) I record his voice and play it back for him in seconds, it didn't take a minute as Haku calculated. He physically notices the microphone connected to the console, but is not aware of the entire signal chain. He feels that this recording process is the work of a demon god. Haku has difficulty grasping and understanding the technology. I have assured him on every occassion that this is not the work of the devil/demon god. Haku had become fatigued from typing so long. His patience let up when his grass skirt started to make his butt itch.

Too much free time? Yes. It's my day off. :D :D :D :D :D

lol.

in that context 'ad hoc' would mean 'thrown together' or using whatever you have available.

Next time please post these questions in the Language and Grammar forum.
