Well back again...Hope you guys can help me here...I am going to go buy some Active monitors and I was thinking some Yamaha or Maudio active monitors would do the trick for me...I am mixing nothing but hiphop tracks...The ones I am looking at right now are in the 400(canadian dollars) range each...So thats about my budget...Should I just say fuck it and save up more or can I get what I need for this kinda money??...Are there other brands that are better for hiphop??..What do you personally use or would like too??

Thanks all,

Geoff

The Mackie 824 active monitors are awesome. We bought them to replace our elderly near-fields about three months ago and we never fail to be impressed by them. Very clear, very flat, extremely accurate in both panning and eq, and EVERYTHING that we've tracked and mixed on them has transferred extremely well to the house speakers as well as other systems.

Two thumbs up... way up.

I totally dig the KRK V8's.... and I use Yorkville YSM-1i's combined with a Tannoy sub as secondaries........

Hey thanks for the quick responses...Blue Bear where in Ottawa do you get your gear usually???

Steve's mostly........ but also on-line occasionally... the odd time at Long & McQuade......

But Steve's probably gets 85-90% of my gear budget!

Thats where I was heading tonight but they close to damn early...I haven't really found a good online place that delivers to Canada...

Thanks,

Geoff

Sweetwater does... I've dealt with them occasionally and they've done me right.

I 2nd that about Sweetwater. They are a great outfit, and they get the lion's share of my business. Only things they don't sell do I go other places for.
The service is exemplary, and the sales staff one of the most knowledgeable on the planet.
They might know more about MOTU than MOTU themselves,,they're certainly more accessible, at times.

right now no monitors under 3000 are touching the blue sky 2.1's...

I like my Mackies, though I would have bought Genelec 1031A's if I could afoord them. Of course, the best thing about my Mackies is that I will never have to listen to NS-10s ever again. This is something I like, a lot.

whats the address for sweetwaters? it doesn't appear to be anywhere on the net that you can find it.

Blue Bear, do you think the KRKs are better than the Mackie 824?
How much do the KRK v8 cost, I've been looking around and haven't found their price....

I use Tannoy Reveal Actives. They are very good, although I can't comment on how good value they are for the prices in the US, since the price difference between these and similar level monitors like the Event 20/20bas is smaller in the US.

So make sure you listen before you buy (no matter what you are buying).

Well it comes down to he KRK's mentioned or the Mackie HR824...But!!! I am buying one at a time due to the money invovled...Heading into Steve's tonight to throw down the cash...And I got a bit of music in my bag here so I can listen to both or whatever else I may come across...

Now another question is....What are some good Studio and Live show monitors...I Figuired I would be able to use the aboved mentioned for both studio recording and mixing and my live show....

Thanks for everyones input....

The Mackie's are good monitors, but when I compared them to the KRK V8s, my ears preferred the V8s.......

Monitor selection IS pretty subjective, so take any reviews with a grain of salt -- what's matters most is how they sound to YOUR ears!

Event PS-8's.
Event makes good monitors too.... but the only problem I have with them is that I find them too forgiving on certain material.

Bluebear, help me out, what kind of material? certain mixes or instruments?
The thing i like about my ps-8's is my mix sounds almost indentical on my stereo,(pretty dam close) which is nice.
