Acoustic treatment or mic preamp

I am just starting out and need to spend some money on new stuff. I am wondering if acoustic treatment is a better investment than a new preamp. I plan on getting an Avalon or a Grace. I will be recording in an unfinished basement at this point.

I haven't really recorded anything yet but am getting things ready.

You are just starting, and your getting an Avalon or a grace?!?!? Can I have a branch from your money tree ;). For sure acoustic treatment though. Even with a crazy awesome pre, if your room sounds like crap, it will be useless. What other gear do you have though?

Yea, just starting out. Buying one piece at a time. The only other pieces of equipment I have so far is an Avalon U5 for bass and guitar, a Neumann KMS 105 and a an AWG16 that I just bought used.

The KMS 105 is something I bought a couple of years ago for stage. I figure I could use that for a little while. I just want to give this recording thing a try. It sounds like a heck of a lot fun. It's big learning curve for me.

So, you believe that acoustic treatment is a better way to go? I think I'll start there.

Yes, for sure! I mean you are going to need other gear like monitors, and in interface, but properly treating your room will yield huge results. Look up bass trapping on google, and read some of the articles on RealTraps - Home. Also note that you don't by any means have to spend hundreds of dollars on pre made panels and diffusors. I treated my room (4 bass traps in the corners, 4 broadband absorbers, and some foam [to tame the highs from my cymbals]) for just under $200. So you will still have the cash to go by a nice pre, some monitors and a solid interface.

Do you have a pre now? Or interface with built in pres? If so then I'd go for acoustic treatment first.
 
I am with the others here in saying that if you have a pre then acoustic treatment will be the next best investment before a better pre.
