Acoustic, softening treble

Is there a way to SOFTEN the treble other than EQ? Adjusting EQ levels seems to end up dropping the volume noticeably.

We have recorded two harps. The treble is sounding ear piercing, not the natural tone that we hear while we are playing the harps.

Any suggestion on how to get rid of the shrill?

Is it ringing at a particular frequency? If so, you might try a fairly narrow cut with a parametric EQ at the frequency that's ringing. Beyond that, you might try using a shelving EQ to cut the highs down a bit in a more even-handed fashion, then boost the overall volume to compensate (or use a shelving EQ to boost the lows and mids).
