This is a sketch of a song....
i had an hour and a half, to make it up from scratch, come up with the parts, write a lyric, and engineer it all...

"Long Journey (dave's song)"

The idea for the song:

a friend of mine has joined the peace corp, and will be shipping out to Kenya, next month, for 2-1/2 years......

so this is written for him.

the recording:

the vocal is a 2nd pass, that i wrote on the spot, so it's one of my more "sh*tty" performances....
the rhythm guitar was done 1st take, with 2 mics to (2) tracks....
the slide setup was the same.....

1st mic: AT4033 >> a-designs audio MP-1 >> dbx comp >> ART DPS (convertor only)>> vs-1880

2nd mic: SM57 >> ART DPS (acoustic guitar with limiting setting) thru convertor >> vs-1880

both vocal tracks done with the at4033.

I pushed the (1st mic)levels hard through the a-designs audio MP-1 to see how much hair i could get on the signal....
then i compressed at about 1 to 4, with a slow attack, and medium release

the 57 was run fairly hot through the ART, but it still had cleaner overall levels being a dynamic....

on mixdown, i took the mono tracks of each take and panned them right and left (at4033 and sm57)

so for the rhythm guitar part, the 4033 would be to the left, and the 57 would be on the right, and for the slide guitar part, the 57 would be on the left..... etc.......

it was recorded in MAS mode.....
6 tracks total.

it's light on the mastering, so crank it up!
all opinions are appreciated....
i'll probably go back and re-record the vocals for a better performance....
sounds better when i know what i'm doing!
LOL

Dude, I like the song. The mix has a good live feel to it.

It seems creativity can really flow out of pressure. Necessity can be a real mother and all that.

thanks, APL.....

a live feel, was what i was going after....
though, the reverb and delay on the vocals probably cheats it of any authenticity......
maybe i should strip the effects off?

I wouldn't worry about it. Sounded good to me. A live listening environment probably has more reverb than you can put in a mix!

Ahaha, well done. It kind of sounds like your making up the vocals on the spot, but in a good way. ;)

I'd actually add a bit of verb just to the first few seconds to open it up a bit. The rest of it sounds very open except for those first few notes. Certainly not a show-stopper, just "mentally distracting" to the casual listener.

Cool tune...

Excellent! Love it. No stinkin loops. Real music.

No.....leave the effects. They're not distracting at all and actually make it sound more like a stage performance rather than chilling in the studio. Like the in the face acoustic. More, please.

hey, it's still here! (my thread......)

my listening environ is pretty dry, so a little goes a long way in my room... but in my "listening" room where my stereo is, it sometimes sounds boomy... so i have to just trust the little monitors and hope they translate well enough to other systems....

Rhythmschism
yeah, i was working it out as i was doing it, but now if i re-do it, i'll know exactly what to do (or not do!)

Massive Master
the guitars are so dry in the beginning (and throughout the song) your idea of adding some at the beginning makes perfect sense.....
once the vocals come in, i could dial it back out......
thanks!

"we don't need no stinkin' loops!"

LOL

that's kona coffee, right?!
;)
thanks for listening, glad you liked it....
