ok, i dont really know if thats what i would call this song but my friend thinks thats what it is. we recorded this in about an hour, except for some basic eq adjustments its pretty much the raw tracks. the vocals are a bit off in places but overall not to bad for a quick take on a new song he had in his head.

the whole thing was recorded on a MXL v67g track by track (i really love that mic!) except for a couple audix f15's as drum overheads

any/all comments would be appreciated, thanks :)

Ever heard of the Violent Femmes?

Nice song, and I like the production.

I'll let Jake tear you apart now

from the title i figured this would be another plan-it-x / ghost mice / defiance ohio / old against me ripoff. luckily it isn't. sounds neat.

i've heard of them, cant say i've listened to them though. i dont think my bud who wrote the song has heard/listened to much of them either, so strike the song up to creativity i guess :)

thanks for the comment!

The song sounds cool, I hope it's not a cover. Sounds NOTHING like the violent Femmes. The playing is sloppy in spots but it comes off fair. The drums need to be worked better to fit the structure of what is going on here. Some emphasis on certain spots of the harmonies would be nice, you are close but it is not quite hitting the full effect IMO.

The vocal sound is kind of trying too hard, the singer needs to relax a bit to get a natural sound across.

I always thought of the Violent Femmes as acoustic punk. That's what I was getting at.

thanks for the comments. i agree the sound is a bit sloppy in places, as example we didnt have a bass on hand so the bassline is just me palm muting my acoustic on the top string :) ..not really the ideal solution, but for a rough job it dosent sound completely terrible and fills the hole somewhat.

its definitly not a cover, like i said he had the song in his head for the past week and we recorded all the parts in about an hour and a half or so. the singer is pretty new to the whole singing thing and for the first take on the song i think it came out pretty well overall, some spots hes a bit off but overall we were both pretty happy with the end result with the time we put into it.

Cool stuff. Add a real bass in there and I think you're onto something.

No, you have to take the odd looking guy as well.

It's a package deal :p

only if he can do that spinning base move thing live on stage

the ladies like it! ;)

I liked this. I was expecting some sort of Against Me! clone, but found something quite different.
Liked the drums and the vocals. Did not like the guitar, waay too boomy. Although I suppose you might even have added some bottom-end to it to compensate for the absence of a bass-guitar?
I'd give it a hi-pass at 100hz, though I suppose alot of people would disagree.

yea i agree its a bit boomy, i posted a new version that i tweaked a bit last nite but i probably gave it a bit to much around 80-120Hz. sounded good downstairs but not so much on my stereo upstairs, different speakers yield a world of difference.

i need to add a sensible bass track sometime soon and possibly re-do the drums with a bit more presence, i'll see what time allows me to do this weekend

just posted a new version thats less boomy, the bass/acoustic track really was out of wack. fresh ears really help to better a mix :)
