Flypaper for freaks
Guys,

Used to play guitar many years ago, and I would like to get a decent acoustic to play around with. I would like it to sound nice, play in tune, as I woudl ultimately like to record a few songs with it.

I was thinking Carver. Could someone recommend a good model? What other criteria should I consider?

Thanks!

Check out the Canadian-made Godin acoustic guitar line (Seagull, Norman, Art & Luthier, Simon & Patrick). The Seagull S6 and Norman B20 are essentially the same guitar. Both have solid spuce tops and black cherry back and sides. When a question such as yours comes-up on various guitar forums these guitars are highly regarded. Best buy for the buck! I bought two Norman B20s for my sons a couple of Christmas's ago. I love my Taylor 814c, but gotta admit, for a few hundred $$$, the Seagull/Normans are solid instruments.

Thanks, never heard of them (and I'm from Quebec, believe it or not!)... I'll look into them.

I will second the Seagull call on that one. I haven't played a Seagull I didn't like. Nice sounds, nice feel.

And although many people are against them, there are some decent Takamine models under $1000.

Now, OVER $1000, I would suggest Martin and Seagull.

Hey, I'm in Chelsea, Quebec (20kms north of Ottawa). Godin Guitars are made in LaPatrie, Quebec. Here's the link to the Seagull site. http://www.seagullguitars.com/. Good luck!

Look into Kona guitars... Not much has been said about these things, 'cause the company is only a few years old, i think.

My recieved one for christmas, and despite the EXTREMELY low cost, i was rather impressed with the sound. I only have the bottom model - K1.. (i think thats it)... and it's at the shop right now, only because the action wasn't that great out of the box. But the shop took a look, and said that it'll be really easy to adjust for me.

You could pick one of those up for under 200 bucks! Futhermore.... from what very little i could find about these things, it sounds like their upper level guitars sell for only $400-$600.... and the people that have them claim they play as well or if not better than a high end Martin.

There is no Kona dealer where I live, and finding more info is pretty tough... but if there's anyone out there that knows a store that has some....... please, do us all a favor, and go check them out! =)

for the money ($499) u need to look at the taylor 110. its an awesome sounding guitar at any price, i did a side by side with every high end acoustic in the acoustic room at sam ash and it sounded better (to me) than any of them.

u need to check it out.

What's your budget?

Will you be gigging/practicing (with drums) with it, or just sitting round the living room?

Those are two things you need to define, those Taylor 110's are very nice, but there's no electronics in it.

There's hundreds of makers...Tell us a litle bit about your style, and we'll all be able to tell you a little bit more of what you might be looking for.

Take a look at the Carvin Cobalt series. I have the A/E dreadnought w/ cutaway and rosewood sides and if stolen, I would gladly pay twice as much to replace it. I can't speak for the lower priced ones in the line, but my guess is that the quality will not be less, only sans electronics and decorative stuff.

If you can afford a Larrivee, get one. If not, the (Seagull, Norman, Art & Luthier, Simon & Patrick) that CM and others mentioned are great values. I have had four Canadian guits, and all have been superb for the $.

Hi,

It's me again.

I've been looking at Seagulls, and I just got an offer for a Seagull M6 spruce.

Is this considered a good guitar? Is $300 a good price for it?

Thanks again!
