I've been recording solo acoustic guitar with some cheap equipment (two AT2020's and a Scarlett 2i2) for a few years now. It's been a great experience with a lot of trial and error and experimentation. Enough to get me interested!

I know sdc's is probably the way to go for acoustic recordings.

I heard some x/y stereo recordings of the Peluso cemc 6 and instantly loved the sound and results. Of course the whole signal chain is important and I heard them through great monitors and an expensive great river Pre.

I can purchase a used set for a great price right now but I'm wondering if it makes sense to buy better mics considering the rest of my setup is a budget setup as well.

Does this purchase make sense or will my Scarlett 2i2 pre-amp not be good enough to step up my recording quality?

Solo acoustic guitar is very low volume so pre-amp gain seems to be a big issue when trying to get a good level when recording.

Cheers,

J.

Hi versone......you don't really go into much detail about your current set up or recording environment.......except what mics you have and your AI. So it's hard to say that your very next move should be to buy better mics. But in case that's where you're going.........I'd say you might want to check out a matched pair of Oktava MK-01's. I only mention those because I've had a lot of experience with them and they are awesome fro recording acoustic guitar and the like.

Sorry.......meant to say Oktava MK-012 mics.

I've been using a stereo pair of AT 4041s for acoustic guitar and mandolin and like them a lot. And I do mean a lot. Highly accurate, big and open sounding. Highly recommend them.

Ended up getting a great deal on a pair of MC 930's. I was concerned that I might need to upgrade to a better pre to get less gain noise but these things are super quite. I'm recording directly into my scarlett 2i2 and it sounds amazing. Couldn't be happier.

u did good, I think the MC930s are excellent for guitars but also for drums, strings, and horns, and piano. very nice SDCs
