kinda an offshoot of the piracy thread to a degree. There you get a good idea of what people think if you used cracked software, copy it from a friend, etc...

so..to take it one step further, how do you feel buying the academic versions and getting away with it if you are NOT a student/teacher? Technically, you are not paying the correct price for the product. I see that there are many places on the net to buy these versions and save quite a bit....up to 2/3rds off in most cases.

There are some gray areas, definitely. I've bought stuff from academic sites. I work at a medical school and do teach medical students, but the stuff I bought was for personal use, not academic, and technically, I'm not employed as a "teacher" or a "student." For most of the stuff, the only requirement is that you work at an educational institution (I had to fax them verification). They don't specify that you must use it for educational purposes. The sites sell some merchandise that is not restricted to purchase by educational employees, too.

kinda like being a little bit pregnant IMO.... seems i remember reading somewhere that the liscense agreement is different too... and specifys you cant use it to "publish"... the ethics thing is on you...

When you buy an academic version you aren't getting the full retail version.

This is comparing apples and oranges.

The stuff I have bought for my kids doesn't qualify for updates, and if you want the upgrades as they come out you have to pay the difference between the retail and academic versions.

My wifes a teacher, and student, and I was a student...we had to show that some form of ID or credentials to get a program. (Student ID, or paystub...).

My wife bought Office 2003 for her Master's program..it's required for the course. It was less than half price at Acedemic Superstore, and it's the full version. She can also install it on up to 3 computers. We also got Audition that way...I think it's the full version also.

I've bought academic versions of Vegas7 and Macromedia Studio and neither are the full retail version.

Read the fine print on the sellers' website. It will explain the terms for each individual software.
