If my computer is equipped with an AC 97 CODEC -- but no sound card -- do I need to get a sound card for recording?

Just think about it - how would you get the audio in the computer then?

The codec is an onboard soundcard. It only allows either two mono or one stereo signal to be recorded at one time. It works fine for the consumer but the sound quality and functionality is not comparable to a soundcard geared towards multi-tracking.

CODEC simply mean COder - DECoder, so, of course, you need a soundcard :)

the AC 97 chips acts in place of a soundcard....it is built into the motherboard so it is not a "soundcard" per se .......so no, you dont need to get a soundcard for recording......the AC97 will work.......

you probably have "mic in" and "line in" jacks so thats where you will connect......

Thanks for the AC 97 stuff -- and a further question

Hi, Gidge.

Thanks so much for your quick and thoughtful reply. I'm going to take the liberty here of asking you a follow-up question -- hope you don't mind.

I use a Boss BR-532 standalone four-track to record my tracks and then I upload them into my computer via a Smart Card reader. You're absolutely right: I do have inputs and outputs like a regular sound card, but so far I haven't used them.

My question is: if I installed a "real" PCI soundcard, would I get significantly better-sounding results than I do with the AC 97? So far, it seems to sound fine, although when I play my mixed CDs on an actual stereo, they seem to sound a bit too compressed. Of course, that might be more a function of my inadequacy as a mixer than the sound card.

Any light you can shed would be much appreciated.

BTW, I really appreciated the thoughtful and helpful tone of your message. It made me feel less like an idiot for asking the question in the first place.

Thanks again, Gidge.
