About to make the big switch

I just had a bad occurance with my adat based studio and was thinking of going hard disk recording. I have a 450mhz pc in the studio that i could convert to a hard disk recording station. Other option is that my friend works at a music store so i can get the new tascam 24 track hd system dirt cheap. If I am to use my computer, what to i back up to or do i just save every project to an unlimited supply of scsi hd's and hope they never crash? Help me out here...
oh yeah, with the 24 track thing, I would also need some kind of new board...
 
With the PC you back up to CDR.
That's 32 tracks of 4:37 on one CDR blank.

Didn't know you could back up to cdr. Cool. I have cake walk pro audio 8 delux. What will i need to set this up and what about mixing.....
 
I thought the Mackie digital 24-track was HD and the Tascam digital 24-track was DVD. What's the deal?
 
I can get either dirt cheap. My bass player works at a local music store and could get either for 5% over dealer's list. Hey.....would that be a better choice than computer based recording??
 
the tascam is HD, but it has a bay in the front for dvd, HD or whatever. It looks like a sweet machine. I would like to get one dirt cheap ;)

to answer the question first posted. I would go for the Hard Disk recording, and not the computer route, they are just to damn unstable for me. of course it all depends on what your doing too. If your doing some serious recording that doesnt leave room for computer problems, go hard disk.

just out of curiousity, how much is dirt cheap? and could you help a fellow musician out? hehe :)..

but anyway, like I said before, aviod the computer for tracking if you can. I know I'm gonna get alot of replies saying otherwise, but thats my opinion, and thats what you posted for(other peoples opinions). computers are too unstable for something as sensitive as recording music. there is no worse feeling than tracking an awesome take, pressing stop and some sort or error pop up (trust me, I know). good luck.
