I'm about to buy 2 pair of monitors. One pair now and on in about a month. Here is what I'm looking at -

Now - Behringer 2031's

Next - Tapco S8's
Tannoy Reveal Actives
M-Audio BX8
KRK-RP8

also concedering going passive

Now - Tannoy Reveals

Next - Yorkvilles YSM1
KRK ST8

I need some advice and suggestions. Also have any of you heard the Tapco S8?

Yo "In need of SCUBA gear:"

I just plugged in a pair of the passive KRK ST8s. I unplugged my Yorkville passives.

My Yorks had a 6.5 inch woofer -- the KRK ST8s have an 8 inch metal woofer.

Quite a difference in sound with the KRKs = much clearer and the KRKs have more power.

For a price LESS than the Yorks, I upgraded.

Of course, there are many good monitors out there depending on what you want to spend and what are your specific needs.

Yo "Money Colored Insect:" :p

What amplifier are you using to power your KRK/Yorkies?

Yo Drummer for Life plus cinco:

I have my entire studio plugged into a Yamaha AX 592 stereo amplifier.

Probably not too many folks do this but this integrated amp lets me spin two tape decks, back and forth or both at once to record; it has a CD input and a CD sound "clear through" button -- thus, no coloring from the amp but it doesn't color much anyways. Also, I have a phone plug, an AUX plug, and inputs for two sets of speakers.

My second set of speakers are commercial hi/fi Infinities which gives me a reading on the how the CDs will sound in other homes and cars.

The amp has 100 watts per channel and it's plenty of power to power the passive KRKs. Very rich sound without being boomy.

Don't get your toe caught in the bass peddle.:p :D :p

Yo Waters of Depth:

Looking at the manual/information booklet for the KRK ST 8s it says:

"Recommended Amplifier Power: 60-120 Watts into 8 Ohms."

Can't tell you about the Tannoys; however, I'm sure you can get the specs from their insightful site.

Just to A/B with. I heard the Behringers and was very impressed concidering the price $299.00. I'd use something like the Tannoy's as my mains.

New and Improving my sound

Just got my Tapco's S8. They sound great. What else would you expect with MACKIE being behind the design team on these!!!!!!! :p

I have a Yamaha CR1000 stereo receiver (100w rms/channel) amplifier that's 28 years old and actually hasn't seen a lot of use. Any opinions as to whether this unit is good enough to power passive monitors, or would I be better off buying active? If I wouldn't be compromizing quality (too much), I certainly would like to make use of a piece of gear I already have, and buy passive monitors to save money. TIA

Deepwater,

Did you get the KRK's yet and have you had a chnace to dial them in? What do you think of 'em?

Thanks!

I just ordered a pair of Tapco S8's this afternoon. After two listening tests in the store, I found the S5's sounded better than the Alesis M1 Active MK2's, Behringer Truths, M-Audio BX8's, and Event TR8's. Since the S5 sounded better than all those, I'm sure the S8 will be even better. I'll post again when they arrive.

Puting in a vote for the KRK's... I picke dup a pair of the RP-5s, and they work very well. I cant attest to the larger ones, but even with 5" cones, they put out nice, even bass.

Nothin' like a three-year old thread brought up by some who joined yesterday. :p

Especially by someone who refers people to Mcintosh amps with EVERY post. Sounds like spam to me:(

Wow... didn't even pay attention to the dates. Oh well... oops, brought it back up to the top again. dammit!

Yeah, but I heard you need a McIntosh amplifier somewhere.

Replace Mcintosh with Naiant Mics and then who are we talking about?
