very usable but plain sounding...go the extra and get a ksm-32...or try out every $300 mic you can....

What are all the applications you'll be using it for?
Are you recording only your own vocals?
What mic pre are you using?

You can do a lot with $300 nowadays.

I think it's a pretty good mic, and a good value for the money.

I use SF 6.0 and Acid 4.0 and I have a Behr MX802 mixer the mic is going into......... any other suggestions?

I have and LOVE a KSM27 which I use with a DMP3 and an RNC and a Korg D1600 HD multitrack recorder. I got it at GC for $270 and think it is a very good mic; I get good, clear vocal tracks with it. When they become available, I intend to get one of the new Joe Meek MQ3s to have a different "flavour" than the DMP3.

I'm not so sure it's that great a value for the money. It's a little too clean for use as a vocal mic, such that I've never preferred it over another. It's decent on guitars, I guess, and I got a good power metal guitar lead out of it. A pair of them made some very good drum overheads too...

Try out the mic first. Being just a student of music, I'm sure that there must be some situations and sources where the KSM27 does quite well, but I just haven't had time to come across it. But, if you really want some alternatives to check out, how about the NT1000 and the CAD M179? Generally tending towards the not-so-hyped sound the ksm27 seems to strive for, and more appropriate for every situation I've come across...

And if you're really looking at that price range, even though it's not really related, how about the Shure SM7? Why isn't this a more popular mic? I've been getting some absolutely fabulous vocals out of it, especially jazz singers. Well, it's not that good through my Behringer, but putting it through my friend's octapre got a good sound, while a grace 101 made that thing RIP. Absolutely killer...

The SM7 is a terrific mike on the "right" singer.
The EV RE20 (or PL20 for less $$) is a "safer" bet if you're buying
the mike sight unseen as it works on a greater variety of singers.
The Behringer, however, won't allow any of these dynamics to sound near their best.

So do you want to get a better pre and a dynamic, or would you
just like to get a condenser with what you've got?
(The Behringer will do less damage with a condenser) :)

Getting a better pre will expand your options-a lot!

For what it's worth.....
Recording magazine has a review on the KSM27 in the April 2002 issue.
The review's final sentence is, "At this price point, nothing we know of touches it."

For that price I'd look hard at the AT 4040. I've heard a lot of good things about this mic, although I admit I haven't heard it.
