Guitar User.
I have had a long road to get this far, but I am just about to get some bass trapping and such going on in my new project studio...

I have in the end two studios being built at the house I bought this spring:D

This will be my small room, with just the basic bass traps and a couple broad bands, maybe something over the mix position....

My question...

Roxul? I found a place here that has the Safety stuff or whatever the guy was calling it in 2x4 panels for $0.71 a square foot

0C 703 was around $1.85 for 1" stuff at the other place I asked about, with paper backing on it... They don't stock it without paper the guy told me... Is it worth the much higher price to go with 703?

what about the Roxul? I have read a lot about you guys buying it up for pretty cheap and using it? are the specs as good? better? I think the final factor might be that the supply house for Roxul is only 5 mins from my house:)

I have some old growth ceder that was taken out of an old house, I worked on two years ago, this will make decent frames I hope, it is 1x4 strips in the 5' length nice stuff! and FREE!

I should take pictures of the room this afternoon.

OC703 is generally more expensive and, imo, it's not worth it. You can get the same results from much cheaper materials. Check out this coefficients chart and compare the roxul and OC703. The denser the material, the better it'll be for bass.

That's an outrageous price for 703 - sorry.

Yes, Roxul is cheaper and for bass absorbtion where you need a lot, it's just as good given the same or higher density. It's a PITA to cut and work with compared to 703 but it is cheaper.

For reflection panels, I'd stick with 703 (shop around for pricing). You don't want really dense material for reflection duties and the less dense mineral wool can sag over time if not really framed up well.

I called around and found a much better price on 703 from a place, but they don't stock it.... I would have to order it, they only have the 1" so I would have to buy twice as much....

What about the Curtan Rock 80? The guy on the phone said they had some sort of thinner, more condensed Roxul product as well for just a few cents more a Sqft... I have at least enough room to pretty well use full 2'x4' traps on all my walls anyway...

Hey, gj. You can get enough to do your room from the place I got mine for ~$120. It's a box of pieces that's 24 x 24 x 48. I used 1" and doubled it up.

I found a place that has Roxul at a good price 5 mins from my studio... I think I will just go with that stuff, and keep the drive short... that old bucket of rust that I drive guzzles gas!

Besides they seem to sell a lot of other stuff I wanna take a look at!

Acoustic Supply did indeed have a good price but a bit harder to get info out of than the other place I talked with. I told the guy on the phone what I wanted to do, and he was pretty cool! Just pretty much said that they sell a lot of it to people who wanna do things like this, and he knows how hard it is to get stuff....

A little pricier, sure, but they look great and are manufactured well...Ethan Winer's traps at www.realtraps.com are nice. I bought the 'seconds' which knocks $50 off of each one. Slightly used at promotion shows and such. Can't beat the price of DIY, but if money isn't the most important thing for you, they really look nice and are professionally manufactured. Plus, with all of the free advice Ethan gives, I figure that sending him my business for the product was a nice gesture of saying 'thanks'.:):)

My budget is more along the lines of using free wood, and cheap insulation goods, and $1.00 a yard fabric from wal-mart :D

I am gonna be building some gobo units as well to place around my tracking stations, hoping to get less cpu noise and tighter guitar and vocal sounds....

Ok I got three bags of Curtain Rock Roxul in the back of my truck and I am about to head on over to the studio and see about doing some stuff :D

I know I have been horrible about pictures but...

Here are some shots before I painted the room.... I think I missed one wall though:rolleyes:

I had just gotten the sanding done on hte new drywall the day before, and minutes after taking these pics swept the floor and got the painting started:D

The room looks a whole bunch better with paint on the walls, but you get the idea... I should have more pictures tonight ;)

Well due to a number of events, including one listed over in one of the safe places....

I never was able to put my frames together last night, just cleaned up more trash from some of the other work being done in the house...

Here is a shot of the pile of supplies and tools ;)

The pile is down by about half the size, I have six panels done now, should have the corner traps and gobos done tomorrow later in the afternoon.... My mic is gonna come UPS tomorrow as well, so I am stoked! I got a door on the studio now, thanks to my dad, gotta put the traps in place and let er rare!

Should have pics tomorrow and maybe a video next week :)

Off topic:
Do you people in US ever build walls from anything else than plaster boards?

Not usually. It's cheap, easy to work with, and an effective barrier. What'd you have in mind?

camera battery was dead, gonna be a few days till I can get back in there again, maybe Sunday afternoon I can go in and finish mounting stuff on the walls, and all that....

three bass traps!

three gobos!

six broad band panels!

Been a busy week of tracking, and getting stuff ready for a tour, but I did take some shots, just uploaded them off the camera now.

One gobo, and a bass trap in the corner!
