When I have a song or something and it says 128, 196 etc in the kbps level, I know what it means, but my buddy says before you burn it too cd, you should use winamp, and realplayer etc, to convert the kps to 320...He says it sounds better, so I do this regularly with my music cd's, am I wastuing my time...?
I'm mainly wondering because I only assume do the same with sounds I'm gonna use for my own music, to bring them up to 320 kbps before throwing them into the mix etc.

Does anyone know anything about this, please respond, This has been bothering me for while now. Thanks!

Also the kbps is the bit rate of a song/sound, if I'm not corrected.
peace!

If I read you right you're taking mp3s you have that are at 128Kbps and burning them to an audio CD. Here the conversion to .wav format is hidden by the software.

Upsampling to a higher rate is worthless. It will sound exactly the same.

If you start out with CD quality or better, THEN you can get the best sound by downsampling the LEAST.

BTW: Yes, # of Kbps = # Kbits per second used to encode the file.

"Your friend doesn't own a green marker, does he?"

....??????

Ditto drstawl's advice. Upsampling cannot add data where data did not originally exist. You are wasting your time if you are upsampling yourself before using software to burn a CD. The software will perform this process for you.

PRiZ-one: That green marker comment is an H/R.com inside joke. It refers to a long and hilarious thread where some "audiophile" claimed that painting the edges of his CDs with a green felt-tip marker made them sound better.

Gee....that old wives tale. Every one knows you need a red marker for that... ;)
