hello

my name is guilherme, from brazil, and reading some topics here, i got some questions about drum OH mics, specially about the Oktava`s M012. Do u guys have good results with a pair of M012`s as OH?! I mean, does it sound pro?!

I heard ppl saying that a pair of ATM450 sounds good too, and a pair of AT4040 as well... about the RODE NT5 matched pair, if anyone have a good take of them as drum OH of it i would be very happy! lol... many ppl say it sucks and many others says it`s sounds nice, so, just hearing...

I`ll be using with a joemeek threeQ or sixQ, probably...

and i have a newbie question about MOTU`s interfaces... the 896HD just have more features than the 8PRE, isn`t it?! or the mic pre`s are different!?! dispite the fact that 896 have 192kHz... 96kHz from the 8PRE is enought for a home studio that just want to sound great?!

My budget is about $3500... and im getting the MOTU interface, a mackie universal control, a channel strip, a good vocal mic, drums mic and a power amplifier... the other stuff ill take a look here in brazil...

i still have questions with my choice for the AT4050 as the vocal mic... im flerting with the Groove Tubes GT57... any advice?!
i would love to have a 414 pair as OH`s, but it would brake me... maybe just one for the vocals (and of course general purpose) is a good choice?!

on the drums i`ll be getting the classic SM57 set with Beta52 for the kick, and the OH`s i`d already talked about up here...

the p.a. i thought about mackie fr800... it seems solid...

thats the point... i want a SOLID home studio sound... nothing too much alternative... but the problem is the money (of course, lol)

i appreciate any suggestion!

ty,

Gui

It sounds like you're making some very sound mic choices. I have used Oktava's (assuming we're talking about the Russian versions) for overheads for years now and only recently have switched. Like anything else, when everything is happening, i.e. a good drummer, playing well tuned drums, in a good arrangement, in a good room, the 012's do a fine job.

FWIW, I think you're on the right track with the 57 Beta 52 and the 4050.
Good luck.

By the way, if you wind up with an older pair of Russian 012's, it's VERY worth the effort and expense to upgrade the electronics via the Dorsey article a while back.

you shoudlnt be buying a pa for a home studio buy a set of monitors instead(unless you will need the pa for giging and your trying to conserve money) the oktavas are a pretty good choice i would say but people either seem to love them or hate them you might consider skipping on the mackie universal control for now since it doesnt effect the sound and you can just mix in the box that would give you a bit more to spend on overheads and other mics 414 as overheads. the sm57, beta and 4050 are all solid choices

What did you switch to?

I switch off between the 012s and a pair of older earthworks cardiods - SR71's.

i have a pair of earthworks sro's that i love on overheads, but the omni thing limits me and my second choice is always my o12's

I had the Rode NT4, it was ok on overs but I really wasn't impressed with it. I just picked up some ATM450's that I'm going to try out sometime soon, they've got some great reviews and the price is right!
