Spartan arrangement Dobro.

Works though. You've done a good job of blocking out the insect world. Not a cicada to be heard, not even a cricket.

Cool tune, very dry though. Needs some more 'life'. Even a touch of verb.

Young Teacher, The Subject....

sorry. couldn't resist.

Cool tune Dobro!

Damn. I know you're playful, but play it straight for a minute. Elaborate on the comment about the reverb...

Pretty nice tune here. Nice clean acoustics too. rich sounding. There's something reminding me of both Jethro Tull and Lou Reed here. I kinda wish I was old enough to have seen those guys in their hayday.

One might argue that the mix needs some reverb, but I could take it either way. I like this one right up close. I could definitely hear other instruments, but again, I could take it either way. Good tune man. Unique tune (and not the euphemistic "unique" :) ).

Really just a matter of preference. I'd like to hear some more 'room' to it.

It's too dry. Not talking about gobs of reverb, just a touch.

that has got to be the cleanest acoustic sound I have ever heard here.. Clean vocals too.. I'll leave out comments about the song itself because there are some artistic things going on here.. I thought this was pretty cool, and very interesting considering all your posts I read!

an extremely clean and dry recording indeed.. great job!

EDIT- beginning vocals were sssibilant.. (?)

Cool song with very honest Vocal.I love this kind of stuff.....just a guitar and a voice translating an emotion..The guitar is super clean and has a really good tone.

I like it just like it is......dry vocal and guitar sounds good to me for your voice.

Did you play and sing this at the same time?Im thinking you did because the vocal and guitar seem too connected to each other to be done seperate.

Good song.

Indeed preference...

Emeric just so you know, I wasn't directing my comment to you. Your post got there just moments before mine. I thought I was first to hear it...damn! :D

Again, good song and sound Dobro

Well my post after yours wasn't directed at you either SLuiCe.

Just a coincidental happening.

:)

I like that song alot dobro....I like the style of the guitar playing (nylon strings?) and vocals, I like the lyrics and the recording....Cool.

I don't know what your other stuff is like, but you should look into an indie act out of chicago called 'gastr del sol'. You might like some of the stuff they did. Some acoustic pieces that are very similar to your tune as far as the writing of the music goes and lyrical delivery.

I hear some "hiss" in it...kinda like Emeric's stuff!! :D

Seriously, I do hear it. I think it's gotta be the ambient noise in your room and the "less than pro" equipment you're using, although the equipment IS adequate. I think you're just gonna need better stuff for this kinda music for hiss free recording..

1:11???? what was that?? I know what it was... just "all by itself"...

this IS up front and in your face.... many choices...artist would be the chooser, I'd think...or the producer ...which I guess is YOU!!

kinda unique in its' own way.. the vocals seem to follow the acoustic in many ways...rather than providing a counterpoint melody. My only real gripe. ..and that damn hiss!!!

Thanks all. The opinions about wet and dry have been *really* useful to me. It's a big question mark for me right now. For these really sparse arrangements, and with a song lwith this kind of emotional feel, I like dry cuz it seems so stripped down and appropriate. I'm gonna experiment with some mild verb though, Emeric. :)

Sabbath - thanks for the heads up on the sibilance. I listened to it so many times, I didn't hear it any more. LOL

Kramer - no, it was overdubbed. That's why the sound's as clean as it is, I think. I tried singing at playing at the same time through two mics for my previous project (the other mp3s on my page at Nowhere), but I was getting some kind of unattractive sound - phasing or something - so I went for overdubbing on this project. Which is more difficult than playing and singing at the same time, and you can't nail it on the first take. But then, when do you *ever* nail it on the first take? :D

nave - thanks for the 'link' - I'll check 'em out.

Tom - cheers - encouraging feedback. :)

mixmkr - sorry, just missed your post - we posted at the same time.

Thanks - yeah, that nails it - the hiss ain't my imagination. I'm using good mics, cables and pres. It ain't neighbor noise, cuz they don't hiss - they flush toilets and shit, and you'd hear that. I'm wondering if hiss can be generated by fields of electromagnetic radiation in a space, or something similar. Reason I'm thinking along these lines is because I thought low level room noise came across as rumble, not hiss.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot. The noise at 1.11 is the sound of my wedding ring rattling lightly on the neck while I'm trying to pull some vibrato out of that note. I liked it, so it stayed.

Dobro--sparse and psychological song. Existential, even. Interesting lyrics--not really that dark, just true. I heard that wedding ring thing and wondered what in the world it was, but I liked it too!

I would have liked a little added ambience--sort of a playing live in the kitchen sound, but thats just subjective on my part.

dobro, I am SUPER diggin' on your stuff. I listened to all the songs, you really know how to use your voice and the acoustic guitar is sweet. I think these are the cleanest recordings I've heard yet. And the style is so unique. I don't know what you've done to these, but I would leave them be (at least as a version). They have their own appeal that I can't quite describe, but I like it. Now I know I'd like to collaborate with you on something, if I'm good enough. Great stuff, keep it up! :D

Very interesting. Not my cup of tea, but it kept me listening. I love nylon string. Nice job on the cat-gut... what was your path and process? I would have liked to have heard a little more wetness orambience... I needed to hydrate often when I was listening. ;)

I listened to your other tunes. I loved the uh... trumpet... in Low.

man that is one very clean guitar sound. i could hear the hiss but i had to really listen. i agree with the ambient comments. a touch of small room type reverb would go a long way here. might even overtake the hiss?

Originality alert. Finally. After a long and mostly fruitless search. Great work, Dobro. Much respect. I would say leave CEP's reverb out of this one...itll kill the intimacy. Thats your instinct, go with it. The guitar tone is really nice.
Now would be the time for you to offer up your signal chain.

Very nice!
Love the guitar,sweet!
Vocals were very good, fit well with the classical.

Real earthy sounding, nice no hype production.

Very enjoyable,
Pete

ARG!! I thought I posted to this, but it was just as things started "taking a nap" for a while.

Anyway, from what I remember... It was interesting that a song with such a simple arrangement could have such a distinctive feel. This was one of those songs where I came away not knowing if I liked it or not. Maybe what you were after?

I believe I heard some small mic pops at 1:27-1:29. However I heard the wedding ring at 1:07, not 1:11. So adjust your time accordingly if required.
