Anyone got any real-life info on these products ie, which is the better value, stability, features, etc. I'm looking to get either most likely as a used product. The older 20-bit Laylas are out there pretty reasonably priced but there are a few 'varks out there as well. Preferences anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Chernman, I am in the same situation you are....looking. I am comparing the new Layla24 (since it does 24/96) to the Aardvark 24/96, among other things. At first was SOLD on the Aardvark because of the preamps, dsp mixing, dsp effects for monitoring (I know a few people who don't like to hear their voices without some reverb). However, I later find out that the Aarvark Direct series won't do the dsp effects when you are using it in 24/96. Bummer. Also the published specs for the converters don't compare well to many other cards.

I'm leaning more towards the Layla24 ($700) since the specs are pretty good. I will utilize an outboard mixer ($150) for the monitor mix and will use a Presonus Blue Tube Preamp (<$200). If, for some reason, I decide that I don't need all of the in's and out's, I may cheap out and get a Digital Audio Labs (Card Deluxe) ($400). It has great specs and people swear by them. I have been harrassing a local shop. They don't carry it, but the salesmen owns one and has talked me into looking into it.

I think the bottomline is you should keep everything in components. That way, you choose the preamp, card, software, etc. that suits you best.

Good luck...post your findings here so I can find out how you did.

I have a Layla 20....upgraded from a Gina20, awhile back. I personally think that you can make exquisite recordings with either the Ard or the Lay....and I think the Layla 20 won't limit you sonically, either. Sure, 24 bit is nice, but I think that, over 20 bit will not be a limiting factor in your HOME recordings sounding top notch. The Layla20 does give off a small hum, and gets a little warm, but as long as it doesn't blow up, I suppose it'll be ok. Personally, if I get a year or two or three out of it, I will have gotten my moneys worth. Getting back to my rant about 24 bit. yes...if you have the disk space, $$ and the rest of the equipment to match. Otherwise, I think basing a decision soley on 4 more bits (over 20) is kinda moot. However, I have seen the Layla24 on ebay sell for $550. BUT....the layla 20 has 10 analog outs VS 8 in the layla24....plus the spdif...which they both have.

Mr. brave chernman-

Buy anything used and you're on your own. Chances are you'll probably get ripped off.

Get the whole deal in writing. Signatures. Names. Addresses..... lie detector test results......

i would say try the gadgetlabs stuff but i just saw they are going out of business. Damn. What about my warranty. they are great if you wanna pic up a used one. they will probably go for about $200 -$300 on ebay. I love mine.

I ended up getting a Layla off ebay for $350. It is in mint condition and from all my tests, works perfectly. I finally have 8 in 10 out. 'bout friggin time. :)
Bye Bye tape. woo hoo.
