Has anybody worked with the Aardvark products? Specifically the LX6 looks interesting to me...I'm trying to find something that will work in Win98 for now...and possibly XP later...

i am using an lx6. it is working well for me so far. i am still in the process of tweaking this setup - need to get a 2nd HD for audio and i think i will try moving it to another pci slot to get the dang thing to stop sharing an irq with a usb controller.

one minor problem is that winamp won't play cd's through the card, although this might be solvable with some other input plugin, i haven't really explored (and it's not a big deal)

i would rather have the 5,6 output be another set of balanced outs, instead of the rca's.

the reverb which is supposed to be part of the control panel has never seemed to work. but then again, i don't care abt that either ;-)

i'm not sure how well it would work with 98, the AWDM drivers are an XP thing, i think

seems to be a nice card for small home recording setup. i don't see myself ever needing more than 4 inputs. same with the outs - i don't really need them for running outboard stuff, and will just be mixing in the computer, so for me they are mostly handy so that multiple programs can be running and can find their own set of drivers. i usually have winamp, winmedia and wave editor, etc. set to use the 5,6 output, and then the four balanced outs are always there for the audio programs

LX6 experiance

I got my LX6 three weeks ago and havn't realy done a big project with it yet. So far I can tell it works fine on three OS: Win98, Win2000 and WinXP - with the right updated drivers (downloaded from Aardvark site). Everything works fine, the DSP effects and all features. The sound quality is superb recording audio - I have only the SBLive platinium to compare. One thing to consider is that you'll have to have a preamp for mics, guitars, basses and any low output instrument to feed the LX6 input. I use a small mixer which is enough for what I need. The card works very good with Cubse SX and has an updated ASIO driver. Latency is no longer a concern. By the way, from what I read I'm very happy I decided on a PCI card instead of UBS interface.

the other day i noticed that i can use the dsp effects on the card, maybe i was doing something wrong before. HOWEVER - they sound like shit! it sounds like latency problems maybe - kind of a digital-sounding ringing in the high end.

this, combined with the fact that i can't run much dirX stuff in sonar without kicking the latency way up, is making me very suspicious that something is awry with my setup. i say "way up" but maybe i'm just being unrealistic. i can run 2-3 effects with the latency at about 10ms. i get the feeling that it's possible to have it lower than this.

any ideas?

winXP Pro
P4 1.8g on an asus p4b
512ram
seagate 80g 7200rpm on p4b ide1 (apps/OS) - shows UDMA5
cdrw on p4b ide2
seagate 80g 7200rpm on promise ultra 66 ide1 (audio data)- shows UDMA4, partitioned into 2@40g
dvd-rom on ultra 66 ide2
direct pro LX6 - 7.04 drivers
msi geforce4 mx440 64mb running 2 monitors
sonar 2.2, reason 2.01

standard PC config, lx6 and video card have their own IRQ's, i have IRQ5 shared between a modem and a USB controller, but that's it.

i've done pretty much all the windows performance tweaks, fwiw.

i haven't run into any problems yet with audio tracks, just the plug-ins.
