Aardvark-I think I give up

the 8 inputs on the front can accept either an XLR plug or a 1/4 inch plug....all have preamps, but the preamp doesnt HAVE to be used.......

your not an idiot...your just frustrated...but hey, thats one less thing to be frustrated about.....

It's not that I can't use it. Just can't use it with 24 bit recording. Haven't had any problem with 16 bit. Sounds really good. So....I once I get the money for a nicer preamp or something I Can run a 1/4" outta it into the front of the Q10 and use the external preamp? Had no idea.....I will give Aardvark another chance. supposedly their drivers will be out by the end of the month.(not likely at all).

You'll take a line from the external mic preamp into the line input on the rear of the Q10. It almost seems like your confused about preamps. When we talk about using outboard pre's, we're talking about standalone *microphone preamps*. A microphone preamp takes a low level microphone signal and amplifies it to line level. Just because you can attenuate the line in channels on the Aardvark doesn't make them microphone preamps, and I've never heard of anybody using outboard line preamps except (except I guess in high end consumer stereo systems).

The line out of the preamp can be either 1/4" TRS, XLR (both of which would imply balancing) or 1/4" TS (unbalanced). The line ins on the Q10 are balanced 1/4" TRS jacks, so that end of the cable can be 1/4" TRS (balanced) or 1/4" TS (unbalanced).

At any rate, I bet the mic pres on the Q10 are as good as any entry level preamps you'll find, so you might not have to worry so much about pres unless you decide you need some variation. "Nicer preamps" will probably start running in the $300 per channel range, up to $1,500 per channel or more.

I am confused now. Before Both you and Gidge seemed to be saying I could run my mic into the external preamp, then out with a 1/4" cable, into one of the regular 8 inputs on the front of the card, not on the back.
So...Huh?

Hey Dan:

Just let me know when you are REALLY fed up with it.
I am looking to buy that unit anyway, so maybe we can talk???

one of us (me or Slack) is just confused...yes u can go from the preamp to the card.....what you call the front or the back of the card could be the confusion...the connectors where the preamps are (XLR connectors) also function as the line inputs as far as i know........

OOPS!

I take back everything I was saying. Those aren't line level INPUTS in the rear, they are OUTPUTS.

Crap I'm sorry man. I swore I was reading that page gidge posted right...but I guess not.

So the Q10 only has 8 mic pres and 4 inserts???? Ouch man, I'm not sure that's so hot. I bet the pres are switchable though.

Anyways, I'll just butt the fuck out man....I'm was just going way too fast and got a little dangerous.

t8 inputs each double as either a XLR mic input or a line level 1/4"..it just depends on what you plug into it....it has 8 line outs....it has 4 inserts for effects processors.....it usually goes for $750....thats not a bad deal considering you get 8 preamps that id put on par with Mackies......

Oh wait they're COMBO JACKS!!!! Haha! That's what threw me!!!!!

Those jacks on the front can take both XLR mic plugs, OR 1/4" TRS line plugs. That's why they look so funny.

Still my stupid fault. Sorry!!!!! Yes, to use an external pre, you plug a 1/4" TRS cable into the front of the Aardvark. You were right. Sorry man.

yeah, it can take a bunch of different jacks at the same time...kinda like Brads mom......

oops..thats the medication talking again.....
