I want to use an external mic preamp with my Aardvark Direct Pro which has high-quality mic preamps in its breakout box. I want to use an external preamp like a Joemeek VC6Q, dbx 386, Presonus MP20, etc. to colorize the sound more than I get from the Direct Pro's pre's.

According to Aardvark, I can just run the analog outs from the external mic preamp into the analog ins on the Direct Pro's breakout box, turn down the gain on the Direct Pro's pres, and let the external preamp do all the work.

Does this sound right? Is this what you would do if you had a regular mixer like a Mackie? I've seen some posts from people who say they invest in external mic pre's and run the out right into the I/O for their sound card (Delta 1010, MOTU, Layla, etc.) but I don't have an option to bypass the mixer unless I go with the option below.

I know my other option is to get a mic pre with digital out (S/PDIF, AES/EBU) and bypass the Direct Pro's breakout box entirely. Would this be better and why?

Thanks for your assistance.
