alright, after demo'ing a bunch of multi-track software i've come to the conclusion the Sony Vegas 6.0 is the way to go for me.

Now with that figured out the next issue is my interface. i was planning on going with the M-AUDIO Delta 10/10LT PCI interface. I've read that you can have multiple cards in on PC. my only question is this. hopefully i word it right.

preamp outputs / mixer direct outs are mono. is there an option for the 10/10 to treat each analog input as a mono input. the reason why i ask is because when recording vocals, my vocalist is isolated in a separate room. she wears headphones. if her mic is plugged into one of the inputs on the 10/10, would she be able to hear herself in both ear pieces of the headphones or is this just not an option.

Each input on the delta is mono.
If Vegas supports Input Monitoring, she will hear the vocals in both ears

sweeet deal, i believe i saw an input monitering option. i'll have to check it out.

You don't necessarily need input monitoring capability. You should be able to monitor directly off the sound card via the settings in the Delta Control Panel (e.g., monitor mix or H/W out). This is actually preferable to input monitoring - since it avoids any latency concerns (however, it will not allow you to monitor any software FX you may be using).

Inputs on the 1010LT (this is my main card) are grouped in stereo, however you can unlink them. Each input has a pan control, so that in the case of a mono input, you can pan it to the center when monitoring through the sound card. The default position for the inputs are wide left or right, depending on if it is an odd or even numbered input. These are all configurable in the M-Audio control panel. Moving the panners by mouse is a course adjustment. Switch to arrow keys for finer tuning.
