Holier than thou
Hey guys,
I think this is a good place for my post. I am currently stationed in Mannheim Germany with the US Army. Of course, being over here in a foreign country really cuts down on how much music I get to play infront of others. Bars are really out of the question unless you spend tons of time in them and get to know the people who run them.
About an month and a half ago, I stumbled across a contest that our FMWR (Family Moral, Welness, and Recreation Service) puts on every year called Mannheim Idol. I know it sounds a little corny, but it really has been alot of fun. The contest runs alot like American Idol. The judges are actually fairly qualified for a contest on a smaller scale like this one. One is an award winning composer, another had a Sony music contract, and another is the winner of an Army wide contest called Operation: Rising Star.
It's a total of 5 weeks of competition. 4 being regular competition rounds held in the bar on base. There have usually been between 150 to 250 people in attendance, and the Finale is tonight, and it is being held at the German/American festival, where we'll be performing infront of 1000+ people. We are down to the final 3 adult contestants, myself, and two others.
I should note that there are 4 categories; Jr. Youth (ages 5 to 8) Youth (9 to 12) Teen (13 to 17) and Adult (18 and up).
The winner of the Adult category will recieve 500 dollars cash, and a 3 day, 2 night trip to Edelwiess, Germany.
This has really been an awesome experience for me, and whether I win or lose tonight, it has been well worth it. I thought I'd share this with you guys because you can alway suggest things to your MWR on post, and all posts have bars on the that can be made available for these types of events. Families have been welcome to every night of the competition, even small children, then just had to be kept out of the main bar area where drinks are served.
This can really also work for you guys who own bars or help run bars out there. It can generate a good bit of money, and it's just an overall fun event.
If you'd like to check Mannheim Idol out a little bit, you can find a facebook page on it. Just search Mannheim Idol, and I'm sure you could google Mannheim Idol and come up with something.
Thanks for reading!
