A technological revolution?

Look Mom, I can play!
Maybe cos I'm an old fart, maybe cos I am now officially designated a "force of nature" sad bastard, but I've been thinking about my time on this forum. (Okay, Ive been drinking as well, but it is Friday;) )

Anyway, don't you all get a sense of being part of a technical revolution here? When I started using CW 8.0 Express, no one in Europe knew what Cakewalk was. Now Sound on Sound magazine has a monthly section/tutorial dedicated to Sonar. BTW, did you know you can buy Sonar in a store in the UK for less than you can pay in the USA? Part of the assault on the European market.

ProAm cards are now at the lowest price than they have ever been and you can buy a digital 12 channels desk with spdif for 50% less than you would have paid a year ago? Amazing. Just when did you see the last increase for hardware? (Okay, don't flame me with this, I am only trying to make a general point here.)

With new interconnectivity, use of standard interface drivers etc, we are seeing a monthly avalanche of techno advancement.

This month SoS mag also has a review of a 1" condenser mic from China, which gets the thumbs up, for only 20% more than you would pay for an sm 58.

Outfield equipment racks are in retreat, software is on the increase and the holy grail of recording is getting ever closer. Or so it would seem.

Sorry for these reflections, I just had to share this with you all.

After all, I don't get out enough and you are the only real friends I have.:)

Man, you are a sad bastard.:D

Another cool byproduct of the technology is that you, in England and myself in the US, separated only by a common language, could theoretically do a music project together and never leave our respective homes, or ever meet...or is that also sad? Still I think being able to share creatively is a cool concept.

Et Tu, Brute?

Sometimes I feel this way too. It is very painful for me to go outside, due to my Fibromyalgia and my problems with bright Lights, so I mainly stay at home unless I am doing gigs. Hold me:(

I feel a homerecording group hug coming on!

Do you have tellytubbies in the US yet??

Actually, Paul, we have a lot in common... seeing as how you've been drinking and I'm just about to start. :)

I also think it's great that I can come to this site, and find friends from all over the world who share a common interest in recording software, hardware, and music. Just think how long that would take me to find you guys if I was limited to walking up and down the streets yelling, "any Sonar users out there".

I also think it's cool that we can share interests despite the fact the many of us are into completely different forms of music - classical, country, rock, metal, hip hop, and on, and on.

And so while you are not my ONLY friends (I do have another one......... really!............ I swear!), I share the sentiments.
< hug, hug>

Now if you'll excuse me, I hear a bottle of Hennesey calling.

TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION=SOCIAL DEVOLUTION
But hey who cares!
Theres like nobody I know who gives a rats ass about recording so what a pleasure it was when I broke down and got my first computer one year ago.
I found other people who could relate to preamps and mike placement.
I found a place to get product reviews that were'nt driven by advertising dollars.
I found cheap tech support.
Last but not least I found a bunch of people who I could harass and piss off anonomously.:D

But the truth is I love you guys (in a manly non-touching kind of way that is).

Q:is 40 an old fart?

All this technology has finally brought the price of quality creation down to match the wallet of the common man. The tracks I am making today far exceed what I could do on the old reel to reel a few (Ok, a lot of) years ago. It is so cool to have a creative outlet just a power switch away.

Now if we can only get the 3 companies that own the recording and radio business into the courtroom to break up their D**N monopolies, there might be a real renaissance of live music again.
Coffee houses, live bands all over the place, miss those days. I am really tired of lip synching, dancing, corporate designed music.

Ain't life begins at 40 brother ?

The trouble with youth is that it's wasted on the young.

Yes, you are an old fart. Love, Dave, 38 in December

Dave,
I won't be 40 till December but I'm just getting ready for the downhill journey.
:(

I hit 41 last week, boys. The Cakewalk Forum - kind of like a second childhood of brothers from a dysfunctional family.
Proud to be here!:D

41? Do you get Discounts at Dennys?:p

The worst thing for me is walking with a Cane. People look at me like I am a nut, or an old man. I am still young, just a little fucked up. Hold me:(

Honest to God ("I have sinned against you!" - love that avatar, David), I took my birthday off from work and my 4-year-old and I had breakfast at Denny's. (Cue Twilight Zone music).

On a serious note (pun intended), being as accomplished as you are David, I ask this question: do you believe it's possible to develop decent speed chops at my age? I didn't pick up a guitar until I was 20 and the solo on this song is about my limit right now.

"Living in the Red"

I'm sure my practice habits suck.

That Fybromyalgia must wreak havok with playing. Sorry to hear about that.
This has nothing to do with cakewalk. Oh well.

ChuckU, that tune sounds great, no doubt! Great stuff, your chops work just fine. Age is just a number, I get older and better.

Yup, it sux to walk with a cane when you are 37, but it could be a lot worse, I can still do most things, So I cannot complain. I am blessed that I am still able to walk, so things are cool here.:)

Hi guys, thanks for all the positive feedback to this post. I feel I am amongst friends. A group hug is definately in order, taking care not to spill ChuckU's brandy:) And a special hug to David, suffering from FM Syndrome. 2% of US citizens suffer from this debilitating illness, our thoughts are with you David. Makes sites like this even more important, building a virtual community with real, like minded people. Most of us even have the same name too. "Richard", if recent posts are to be believed.

Chuck, David and I collaborated recently on a track together called Drovers Hill, without ever speaking. Here it is :

The technology to do that just wasn't around even a few years ago. And thats what I wanted to reflect upon here, Acidrock is spot on when he stated :

TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION=SOCIAL DEVOLUTION

Well, at least its true for us here.

Acidrock, your sense of humour is great, are you part Irish?:p

Chuck, playing chops like that you can be in my band anytime you want.:D

Middleman, your post was oh so true. Here in the UK there is a huge backlash going on against pop culture, trying to make local radio stations play a wider range of music instead of the usual top 100 garbage. But its like p*****g in the wind.

So what are the factors at play here? Music, technology, community, learning, self-help, camaraderie, humour. Thats a lot of positives.

You can tell I am older than most of you, (a very young 47), I work from home am alone most of the time (semi-retired, management consultant), so like David, this forum is important to me for a number of reasons.

But most important, keep makin music, whatever your style.

Another group hug anyone?:D

Nice collaboration guys. Did you send mp3's to each other, or .wav's or bundle files?
$hit! we're back on Cakewalk again!

Lol:D ChuckU.
Thanks for the comments on the song, isn't Davids playing awesome?:)

I sent David an MP3 of my bass and rythm guitar and he put violin over the top and sent it back. Now I have Wavelab I'm keen to take Davids MP3 of his violin only and convert it back to a wav inside wavelab and glue all three tracks together and master them properly. Wavs are too big for our isp's to cope with, so snail mail was the other possibility.:(

Dave... you play violin ? Nice to know I'm not the only one here... even I'm not that blessed like Mae. Hey, I'm 26 anyway... Still learning alot Tell me if there's any tech stuff that alowing Violin & MIDI to be married...

Paul, the song's sounds great...
It's... so... Great....!!!

:)

Holly Zetto...!!!

So he is "The Legendary Mr. K" himself...? Wow... Thank's for the link Paul... I must be blessed this moment...

"...Thou who believes in Him, will acquire light that guide to the right way of never though before." Zettian Bibble.

God bless this forum...
