hi there,
i got this self-made snake, just a bunch of XLR cables wrapped together and it still looks like a mess, i'd like to replace this by a little stagebox, 8 channels will do, but now, i'd like to get me one with a detachable cable,
so when i use it in my room i plug a 4 meter cable in it, and when the drum is in the hall or another room i want to plug a 10 meter ("snake")cable in it

what kind of models are there on the market?
i guess i'll have to look at something with socapex connectors?
thats as far as my knowledge goes...

how do you guys keep the wiring for drumsets clean and tidy?

cheers,
earworm

Socapex is not your normal snake connector for multipins cabling. There are many different types out there though. Check with your local pro audio rental company and see what they are using:)

I use a subsnake with a box and a fan, then short mic cables.

Disconnects are expensive. Expect the least expensive ones to run you about $100 per connection if you have them made for you.

it would be less expensive to have a 4 meter snake AND a 10 meter than to have one with a disconnect. less expensive multi's can be problematic.

Both these guys are right. Even a basic Elco disconnect (one of the cheaper ones) is pretty spendy. If you start getting into MASS connectors, the cost can become considerable.

I would just get a 10m snake and coil the extra.

I am getting together with four other guys and buying the tools to do disconnects ourselves.

Crimp tool- $125-$175 Each brand requires it's own tool.
Pin extractor- $30-$70 Each brand requires it's own tool.
Elco connectors- $10-$30 per side, depending on # of channels. I don't have a problem with ELCO, you just have to take care of them.
Pins/sockets- 25-75 cents each. An 8 channel snake means 48 pins per disconnect, plus extras for errors.
Amp Series 1 CPC connectors- $10 per side, but 12 channels is the limit. The one advantage of these is they use the same pins and tools as Ramlatch multipins, which go up to 56 channels (but are a couple hundred dollars each, just for the connector)

16 channels would be perfect, but so it goes.

Whirlwind MASS and VEAM connectors are also very expensive.

Here is a thread from ProSoundWeb about making one.

Audiopile deals EWI, which is pretty inexpensive. They may make custom stuff.

interesting,
i just kept this in mind:
"always use the shortest signal flow"

i thought i'd be best not to use a 10 meter snake in my small room, then i'm letting the signal run trough a "stupid long distance",
but whenever i put a drummer in a different room i do need this lenght...

but i assume that i won't notice a difference between a 10 or 4 meter snake?

and do you really suggest buying a decent brand? i'm on a budget, a tight one right now  , are there brands i should really avoid or will anything work...of course it'll work, but for how many years...
thank god behringer doesn't make cables yet...at least i haven't seen them yet...

I'm pretty sure Whirlwind makes them and if they don't they will for a nice fee.

You'll be fine. I think you'd be hard-pressed to hear the difference in length.

Just about any snake that you take care of will last you for many years. There's gotta be a distributor near you for the many budget snake companies out there.

ok, somewhere this summer i'll probably buy one...
right now i'm trying to keep my bank account out of the red....
