A small problem, I need some input on an eBay auction.

I recently sold a Radial Effects Loop Pedal on eBay, one I had listed on here previously. An eBayer bid on it, won it, paid for it. I shipped in USPS flat rate with a tracking number. I entered the tracking info into paypal so it auto-notified him, etc.

Today I receive a message from him stating that USPS delivered to him an open, empty package. Telling me that I need to do something to resolve this issue quickly.

Now...what in the fuck?

Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks,

KT

My only thought is to find the receipt (on my desk at work, which I can't get to until Monday) and hope that the weight is included with that tracking number as an identifier.

Even so, I didn't insure it because the damn thing only went for 50 bucks.

I just found the receipt.

shows that I shipped the box weighing 1lb 5.60oz Yay!

I don't mind at all to help this cat figure out wtf happened, but I know already from the way he's talking he's going to file for a chargeback from paypal and that shit just isn't right.

He says that they delivered to him, an open, empty box. Surely to god his postman isn't that f'n stupid?

I'm thinking A. he's trying to pull one over on me, or B. the postman left it on his doorstep and someone snatched the goods and left the box lie.

*shakes head*

Since you and the post office both have proof of delivery the buyer is screwed. He needs to contact the local police and report a robbery.

You may be protected under Paypal's seller protection policy. Check the transaction for details; it should tell you.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to contact your local PO and ask about the situation. They will probably have to contact the buyer's PO to see what is up. Basically they will contact with the local route carrier and ask them what is up.

If you sent the package with DC, it would have been scanned on delivery, so it's pretty unlikely the box was open and empty at that point.

Oh, if you used Paypal to print the ship label, and the label was placed on the box such that the barcode needed to be cut to open the box, there is a 0% chance the box was open on delivery because it couldn't have been scanned. I mean, yeah the carrier could have typed in the DC number, but now we are in the area of a very serious irregularity--never happened to me, and I'm pretty close to 2,000 packages shipped via USPS.

Have the buyer send you a picture of the open box (which needs to be retained for postal inspectors anyway).

i'M ninety nine percent sure this would never happen, but there are some pretty stupid people out there:rolleyes:
One of my pet peeves, so I'll avoid a tangent, but seriously everybody wants something free, with no regard to the business or person they are screwing over. See it everyday at the dealership, and oddly enough I'd say it gets worse with age.
Especially at the price he snagged that thing for (as you know I would have loved to have that box)
I hope it works out for you sir.

Sounds like it's between the buyer and the post office and the police, if necessary. You're in the clear. I think he was probably trying to scam you to get his money back. But with the U.S. mail, you never can tell. They're pretty incompetent here where I am, but I don't think they would resort to opening a box and stealing something and then being stupid enough to deliver the box! They would just take the item and throw away the box...not delver it.

I received this message from him today.

Hello Friend,
I am now living and working in Caracas, Venezuela. Courrier received my package open and empty, so they sent me a courier notified about this, and recommended that I tell you (the sender) on the situation.
Please tell me how to solve it, that I had never happened before.
Thanks.

I simply replied back telling him that the post office has a form to fill out for rifled or rummaged through packages and that he needs to fill one out. Also, being that I have the receipt showing that the package weighed 1lb 5.60oz at the time of dropoff at the Post Office, as well as the tracking information for the flat rate USPS box that I shipped, it seems as though I've fullfilled my obligations to this transaction.

Thanks for the responses guys, I really appreciate the different views. Thanks!

Another reason for me to never do ebay again...

I suspect this......

has more to do with the problem than does this......

It's not ebay's fault...... I never allow international bidders on any of my items.

Me too, I used to allow Canada, but I don't even do that anymore.

I make clear in my auctions that I only ship to Cont. US. I had no indication that he was out of country until that very message from him.

Haven't heard anything for a few days, wonder what's next...

Well if he's out of the country then where the hell did he have you send the thing?:D

His customs broker in Miami, apparently. That's about all I could gather from my new friend's broken English.

Then that is where the problem lies. Seems to me you did your part in good faith to make the deal work correctly. I'd tell him to complain to Miami!
