Alright what i really just want to know is what is the name of the cable connection used to connect a Mixer to a soundcard.

A buddy of mine has a Allen and Heath 16:2 mixer and its quite nice. We wanted to eventually try and record some demo stuff on our own. How would we go about connecting it to the pc to utilize all 16 channels of the mixer.

For example, When recording drums we want to get snare kick and whatnot on different tracks in Sonar to do adjustments. Im not a complete newb at recording but I dont have experience with very technical and expensive pieces of equipment, so any help would be appreciated.

How many inputs do you have on your sound card? You can only utilize as many of the A&H outputs as you have sound card inputs. If you do have 16 inputs on your sound card, and you've got 16 direct outs or Inserts on the A&H then you can get each channel individually into your computer.

There is no one "name of the cable connection." There are a few different issues, being the level reference (mic/line/instrument), balanced/unbalanced, and type of cable (XLR, 1/4", RCA). Those are just some examples.

I'm not specifically familiar with the A&H 16:2, but it's probably got main outs on XLR and/or 1/4" connections. XLR is a balanced cable, 1/4" can be either balanced (TRS - 2 rings) or unbalanced (TS-1 ring). Those main outs are probably line level (+4dBu) but may even be switchable to mic level (-10dBu).

Sorry if this is getting to technical, but basically you need to figure out how many inputs you have on your sound card and what type of inputs they are. Once you know that, you just match the corresponding outputs from the A&H.

Hope this helps.
