i was just wondering. if i were to enter the world of computer music (MIDI, cakewalk etc) does my laptop need to have something special like specific ports etc? (a real beginner i am)

If you have, or have space for a card that has, either USB2.0 or Firewire ports you can then acquire the audio interfaces to plug into them.

you mean like a USB external sound card?

Depending on the age of your laptop it may have one or more of the following interfaces....

• USB 1.0
• USB 2.0
• Firewire / 1394

If it DOES have one of these, then there are soundcards/audio interfaces that will plug into them and provide you with varying degrees of functionality, depending on your needs and budget.
