i want to know the actual difference between sm57s and 58s. i am using 58's on my guitar cabs and it sounds kinda muddy. will the 57 fix this? i know it has a better freq range and you an get closer to the signal source with out the round ball pop filter, ( i took em off my 58s). i am willing to buy the 57s and all, i am just expecting a difference. will there be one? i heard that 58s adds bass and mids to the mic to make vocals sound better and the 57s is natural sounding. i like the sound from my amps, i just need to hear that coming from the monitors. i know this is an annoying question to some, i just want to know. thanks alot. it says i have a 57 on my signature cause i was expecting one at one time, i am using 58s right now.

57's and 58's are nearly identical and if you're cab sounds muddy it probably has to do with your amp settings. Try turning down the bass.

I'm no mic expert....but your statement that the 57 sounds "more natural" I think is probably correct. In the past when I have spoken or sang into a 57 I have thought "man, this thing gives off no extra color to the voice" like a 58 or another vocal might.

Then sometime around that point I started seeing all kinds of people using 57s on vocals in videos and such. I'm not sure if that was done for looks or what, but I do recall hearing at one point that there was a small trend going around of people using 57s on vocals more often.

I think that idea sucks. But for your guitar cabs, get a 57. Either that or get an old EV mic. They made some great ones that sound excellent on instruments. Check on this one

most people say the 58 is essentially he same mic as the 57 with a windscreen built into the ball. possibly more proximity affect from that. If you have already takent he ball off, you pribabaly won;t see a big diff in the recorded signal with a 57, if you are going to try a different mic, you might want to get something outside of the 57-58 family for more variety (senn. makes some good for can mics in the same gerneal price range for instance).

muddiness is most likely a big factor of the mic placement, and/or room itself. Try moving the mic around and do several different test recordings. Try pulling the mic back and inch or two and see it that helps with the mud. You seem to want to put the mic as close as possible to the speaker, but that will intensify the low frequiencies, where you find most of your mud.

Do a search for the link to the slipperyman page, tons about micing electric guitar there.

Last try EQ, when mixing try a sweeping eq and roll oiff the bass and move it through the lower frequencies, you might be abel to make a slight adjsutment that solves your prob without losing the "big sound" you get some the proximity effect.

I apologize to all for my typing skills.

Carry on.

The EV ND967 is a great mic for stage vocal, and works well for guitar cab. It's markedly better than all the other hand held ND mics. It's the only other EV N-Dym mic I would use on my guitar cab, if I didnt' use the ND468.

Pay no attention whatsoever to the rep crap. That is the most worthless thing about this entire forum.

I'm not the one that gave you the neg rep but if your dumbass would do a search you'd see that this topic has been gone over ad naseum. Both the 57 and 58 use the exact same identical capsule the only difference is the windscreen. If you can't get a good sound with a 58 with the screen off then you aren't going to get a good sound with a 57. Stop being a dumbass and start making more music, oh and stop sucking at it.

I forget when it was but whenever it was that I started Mojo Pie I started out with reviews that sort of answered common questions that came up again and again on the forums including the dreaded SM57 versus SM58 question...
