i've noticed it's not only what effects you apply but what order you apply them. when is the best time to apply eq? before or after compression, reverb, normalization, or just a little here and there. is when you add it a factor or is this just my over active imagination?

Not exactly an answer to your question, which is about sequencing effects. More a response to the phrase "a bit here and there". Every time you apply an effect, you're screwing with bitlength, involving a probable degradation of signal. (Sonusman?) The fewer effects used, the better, in other words. Apply EQ just the once, is what I'm suggesting.

so, do you just use eq on the individual tracks and not after mixing down? is it better to apply effects all before mixing down?

Well, you can apply effects either when you're recording, or in the editing/mixing phase, right? A lot of sensible people recommend recording dry, without effects, and adding them later as the need arises. Record it dry, then EQ each recorded track that needs it, just the once.

Dobro is right, I have been learning the more effects i try to use the more muddy mix i get in the end. Its nice to have all the gadgets to play with ,but it seems that i have been using less and less. I have been recording with the effects on because i only have one processor. You might have to do this depending on how many sends or processors you have. Then you may just want to compress the final mix.

Look at me talking like i know what the hell im talking about! You do learn alot from this site!

now i just gotta lear to the stupid thing! eq's tuff because it so hard to hear the little differences.
