a problem with my 424 mkIII

i got a "like new" tascam 424 mkiii off ebay and this was my first attempt at recording. i recorded on to track 1 following the directions in the manual. now when i play it back through monitors or headphones the right side seems to be weaker and kind of cuts out some times. if i mess with the master volume (like, push it back and forth, not up and down, i'm not adjusting the volume, i'm just touching it and messing with it) sometimes i can get it back to normal. has anyone experienced this? did i get screwed? how much is it going to cost to have this repared?

Try cleaning the heads real good.As for the fader,is it making noise when you touch it?If so spray it with some compressed air to blow out possible dust contamination on the contacts.As far as repair cost,beats me but good luck

Off the cuff, it sounds like maybe an intermittent solder joint on the Master Fader,.

... but would be impossible to tell for sure on a BBS discussion thread.

The Master fader could also be damaged or dirty, (guess).

i don't think it's the heads. i cleaned them before i started. it has something to do with the master fader. i have to hold it to the left to make the speaker on the right play at the right volume. if i just touch it and wiggle it around, the sound will cut in and out. i'm guessing there's a wire loose or something. do you think i would be able to resolder it if i opend it up? i have no idea what this thing looks like on the inside.

That makes two of us, but...

considering that's what it sounds like, it might not hurt to take a look at the insides, & maybe ID the master fader connection. A light touch up of the solder is fairly easy, itself.
