A newbie question about EQ...

Is it true I don't need to use compression or equalizer if I've got good samples to begin with which cover the whole frequency range? I have a sharp ear so I almost always end up with a steady song in which all the frequencies bounce nicely to the top.

Also, If I try to do some eq'ing, I sometimes end up having "clip" notification in Soundforge... How can I raise the eq without getting clips?

by lowering the volume..

Compression is meant to even the volume of all the diffent frequencys out, but if you got tight eqing, it shouldn't be neccesary, it can still make the choon sound better though..

Try useing subtractive equilization. Instaed of boosting high end EQ, try cutting low mids. Experiment. The real strength of this is you get less phase shift by useing subtractive rather than additive equilization.

... and it's harder for the ear to hear subtraction. try raising the eq, find the frequency that really pisses you of and lower it. Wether it's "true" or not that you dont "need to use" comp/eq is very much up to you and the material
