Hello!

Two days ago i finished the mixing/mastering of 3 songs. Its an kind of melancolic jazz, im not sure what to call it! The intruments used were Electric piano, upright-bass, vibrafon (im not sure if thats the word in english. But its an piano-like percussion intrument), drums, accordion and mondolin.

you can get the songs from my FTP

adress: FTP://213.67.226.176 port: 21

pass: yeah

song 1 and 3 are a kind of slow jazz with and clear melody and alot of harmonies...
song 2 is an french like song. it could come from the movie Amelié.. the songwriter/producer wanted an old transistor radio sound in the beginning and in the end. It's very interesting what you might think of it.

Anyways, i would really appriciate it if some of you could come with some contructive criticism.

thanks alot / Jonatan

Hi, Jonatan.

I listened to 1. Oooooo, very dark, with a bit of lightening up toward the middle and then dark again. Very interesting sonically. The intro kinda dragged on and on, maybe some strings during the intro to break up the monotony. Good job capturing the detail.

The intro is two upright-basses playing octaves and trying to produce as many harmonics as possible. All three songs are what we in Sweden call a "svit". All three songs are acctually one song, they tell an story. Thats the reason for the long intro!

"Good job capturing the detail."
thanks man!

Interesting music.......appears you have a good mix and the instruments are well defined.

Only real problem I heard was I'm speculating all the players were in the same room? the snare seems to be resonating from the volume level of the other instruments.

If this is correct, I'd suggest putting the drummer in another room or isolating him from the other instruments and monitors.

Nice change of pace though.

Thanks I think so too!

"Only real problem I heard was I'm speculating all the players were in the same room? the snare seems to be resonating from the volume level of the other instruments."

Well.. not really. We recorded the electric piano, drums and upright-bass at the same time, same room. But we damped the room pretty much so there really wasn't to much of the snare that got into the bass-microphones.. the piano was lined with an directbox..

What i did was that i compressed the snare pretty much to get the sound of the brushes brush the snare. The songwriter wanted the snare to give the song a flow, to fill the empty spaces. Now when you say it i believe i compressed to much. What else could i have done to get the same kind of flow?

"But we damped the room pretty much so there really wasn't to much of the snare that got into the bass-microphones"

Actually what I'm refering to here is not the snare bleeding over into the mic on the bass, but the sound vibrations of the bass causing the snare to "rattle".....might not be that at all, that's just what I thought I was hearing.

As far as creating the flow.....I'm not really sure, maybe someone else can give you better guidance on that question.

I liked the tune though.

Oh, well, then I'll have to get the other 2. Can you give a little background on how to listen to a svit? Do you need to be Swedish? Do you have to develop a taste for it like those crazy Norwegians and their luttefisk?

oh ok.. well.. i guess thats possible. never really thought of that... and then, of course, the compression will enhance that.

hehe.. no you don't really need any background. just enjoy the music. its like an concept thats all. I can't really tell you any background of the tune. I did not write the songs, you would have to ask the composer.
