a new instrumental - "Redwood road"

https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/redwood-road

this is a first pass mix......

i'm thinking about turning this one into a song....

slight deconstruction:
get rid of all the solo guitar;
but keep the clean guitars.
add in some super dry crunch rhythm, just stabs of it...
vocals are high, and kind of sassy.
if that's a term.

ideas?

well, about a hundred folks have looked in on this.
but no one has commented, don't know whether that's a good thing, or a bad thing! heheh :p
just a heads up, i'll take it down soon.....

i've already finished the 2nd version of it.

dont' know if i'll keep this version or not

Nothing I could hear, to me and on my systems sounds all dialed in. Is that a Robin Trower influence I'm hearing there?

dm60,
man, i love trower.
and i do use a vibe from time to time,
and i like to bend into vibrato,
i guess i came into the same stuff that trower likes,
tho i wouldn't say he was an influence,
i didn't hear trower until after i was well into my own thing

my first real rock band,
we covered 'day of the eagle', 'caledonia', 'too rolling stoned' and another one i can't remember.......

It wasn't so much the sound, just a vibe. Like Led Zepplin is Rock, like Deep Purple or Aerosmith, but they don't sound the same. That was more of what I was referring too.

Great intro. Fat bass and interesting clean part.
Is there a reason the bass is on the far left?

This mix worked a lot better on my headphones than my speakers. I felt like everything always had something going on and it got lost somewhere between my speakers and me.

edit: actually the whole mix is left leaning to me.

gotcha, that makes sense.

that's definitely where i'm coming from..
trying to write stuff that is modern, but feels like classic rock.
a little proggy here and there....

the 'real' bass part if panned dead center.....
but the 'synth' bass part, which is on the stereo drum track, leans a bit left.

you know, i have this cool WAVES plugin, S-1, that allows you to tilt the stereo image...
maybe i'll try messing with that, see if can center the image better....

Like I commented, your stuff is always top notch Rob!!! You rock!!!

WELL, my latest tracking sessions went real well the last couple of days..
i'm happy with the new version of this instrumental i had...

it rocks.

it's kinda dark, material wise,
i tried to make it hopeful and desperate at the same time......

the new version will be called "Angel".

i'm going to do something different with this one,
well, just a little different,

i'm going to mix the levels from the Sub Buss level.

all clean guitars have a buss,
all vox have a buss,
bass = buss,
drums = buss,
heavy rhythm guitars = buss

and lead guitars = buss

i found that once i put faders up on the rhythms, vox, bass, and drums, it kinda mixes itself.
only the lead guitars, occasional heavy rhythm guitars and vox's really need rides overall,
so i'm gonna automate the busses instead.

why not.

used this for the new heavy rhythm parts:

schwarze,
that's a shure KSM 44.

really sensitive, you can get 10 different tones by moving it a quarter inch 10 different ways!
LOL
