i think the vox are too hot......

all the guitars and bass are done with the pod xt......

this one is inspired by a situation happening in my life right now......
my girlfriend is back east dealing with elderly abuse and identity fraud on her father.......

download "Thief"

here's the lyric:

"thief"

ok-
you're just a thief
got no respect
a single minded thought inside your tiny little brain
a stain
on society
do you think i give a flyin...
fortune has it that you will pay....

you will pay

you will pay

you will pay

(dirty lowlife)
(disgusting thief)

you will pay.
you will pay.

Cool song dude...

Its heavy, but also kinda light and soaring....

The vocals kinda remind me a bit of Jon Anderson of Yes... they could definitely come up a bit and maybe a bit thicker...

The guitar work is excellent, very tasty... I love your style..

Good job!...

i agree that the vox are a bit hot.

the main riff (mostly the timing) reminds me of a prong type groove.. kewl.

funky cool panning during the 'solo' section.

guitars are brutal.

First off- thanks for putting your "name" in the file name. It just makes it soo much easier for storing.
Most people don't think of it it seems.

Nice! Cool groove man! Cool lyrics too.

I like the guitar sound as well.

The snare sound isn't working with the mix though. Sounds like a vegetable in the fruit bowl. (I gotta remember that one! LOL) It's not bad, just sounds like a different room.

Nice job man...Good production.

Second listen...

Feels a bit like Janes Addiction.

Love the hesitation on "flying f... fortune..." ...clever.

Good tune man. Entertaining! Good guitar playing too.

thanks a lot for checking this out... had to do something heavier after the last one

kelly5150-
the icebreaker.
thanks for listening, did you think the vox were 'too loud'?
maybe i should start listening to Yes again, eh? LOL

volthause-
vox too hot, i thought so.....
it sounded just right when i final mixed it.....
then when i played it back through my little pc speakers, it was obvious that something was 'too hot' ;)
prong...... haven't heard that name in a while.....
the solo panning, so simple, just twist the knob...... i caught the tail of the delay a couple of times.... kinda sloppy on my part.....

SLuiCe-
or is it jack skelington?
(such a cool flick... got it on dvd.... watch it every x-mas and halloween)
vegetable in the fruit bowl LMAO.......
yeah, it's the kit out of the zoom 123......
i didn't process the kit sound at all..... maybe i should hunt for the best 'snare' sound i can find among the kits, and then take whatever i can get on the bass drum and toms/cymbals! :)
glad you liked it!
shortest tune i think i ever recorded....... 2:11

Very Jane's Addiction. Me like.

Yeah, I could see the vocals coming down just a TAD. Bot only a tad.

The hat's a bit bright for me, as well as the snare.

Nice guitar, dude. You can make that bitch sing.

God, your voice sounds like Perry. That's good.

Very creative.

What is this lately? Invasion of the real musicians? The last freaking ten songs I've listened to sound like everything that SHOULD be on the radio. It's uplifting and depressing at the same time, considering I'm utterly incapable of this level of talent.

*sigh* Maybe I can make a name for myself with my witty replies to everyone else's GOOD music.

Nah, I doubt it.

Maybe I should restart my Prozac prescription.

Thanks for posting!

Good gracious!!! I love this......Just got your very own folder at Toki's Place!

I think you could even brighten the vox a bit and verb em back to keep the transients from biting. The bass could growl and clank just a tad more for me. The only thing stickin out to me was a bit of the guitar rythym and cymbals..

Oops, disregard everything I said, I listened to "Take It All"...LOL

Ok, after listening to the right song "Thief"... It definitely doesn't sound like Yes, It sounds more like Janes Addiction...

Killer guitar work on this one too... Like I said before, I love your style....

You sure get some great sounds out of your PodXT...
I havent played through mine much since I got it, I dont have the patience to get in there and tweak it... guess I'm hooked on my Boss VF-1..

I can definitely hear the vocals good...

Anyway, nice job man...

thanks for all the good eq info people.....

PiltdownMan-
any relation to neanderthal?
;)
i dig JA, though i've never played any of their tunes.... the new ones' real good...
i did a new mix last night.....
and DID bring the vox down, a tad.....
i re-eq'd a bunch of stuff, and it allowed me to bring the vox down and still maintain clarity in certain places, and blend it in more in other places.....
i tried rolling some highs off at the hats like you suggested, but i lost to much from the other parts of the kit, so i had to be real selective with high Q's to get anything off of those hats..... the snare, i had a little more luck with....
appreciate the comments........
don't take prozac. bad for the mojo.......

Toki987-
yes, last nights experiments led me to exactly your suggestion..... brighten up the vox a bit, no verb on the lead vox, but some verb on the backups...... i did add some high end on the bass, and it did bring out the growl a bit....
i need to post the new version......
i'll upload it to nowhere at 160kbps, and post here when i do.... then you can compare the 2.......

Kelly5150-
that pod is fun, and i find, it doesn't matter how much time i tweak it alone, i still change stuff on the fly as i'm actually recording......
you know, you hear certain frequencies that are muffled or stand out, when you mix it in with the particular track you're working on..... it really is easy to reach down and just twist a few knobs to dial it in a bit better.....
i just need more recording time with it, to figure it out better.........
the "Take it all" was done with my boogie and marshall tube pre........

ok, i did a new re-mix........

and tried to improve/correct some issues with the help of your suggestions......

Go Here to download/play "batsbrew-THIEF#2"

i re-eq'd several of the tracks..... vox, guitars, bass, drums....
i think i got the guitars to come across a little more aggressively, a little more bite.....
a little high end sheen on the vox, which let me drop em a bit in the mix....
scooped a little at 200hz on the bass, and boosted a touch at 9-hz.........
drums got a slight push at 120hz and a scoop at 400hz.....

i'm hoping that someone will scope out the new mix changes

and tell me if'n i done good er bad.......

I'll get to this later, whopper Gonzo... school lets out at 9:50 (PM!! ) (at Redwood SLCC)... ah, these 16-hour days  :)

sounds better. more sheen, and a punchier overall sound.

i think some of BG vox are still a little "stacked" sounding.... kinda like there's a bit too many voices struggling to be fit into the mix. simple solution, trim a little more low end off the BG vox. keep the fundamental melody vox the way they are, but the ones dashed in for flavor should be a little lighter... does that make sense?

liked everything else.

Well, Gonzo! Finally someone who has an inkling what the hell Piltdown Man means.

I don't know about everyone else, but this is much kinder to my eardrums. This is just so damn creative! Oh, wait, the mix... the hat and snare don't jump out and stab me in the eardrum nearly as bad. Good levels on everything, IMHO. LOVE the bass part in the solo.

I think you've made an improvement. Congrats! This is quality shit.

Keep it comin'.

Piltdown Man

Everything sounds good, definite improvment.. drums could be a bit thicker maybe.... What do you use for drums?...
Killer drums...

This is a great song, lotsa cool changes in it... could be a little longer though...:)

That was one wickedly, well done metal tune!!

I never heard the first mix but everything sounded just about perfect on this one.

I loved the drum sound you got from your drum machine! Nice sound! I thought they were real until I red they weren't.

I feel totally inadequate now:(

I gotta get me a Pod, me thinks.....................and more rum. :D

Cheers! :)

ps; regarding Piltdown man's name. I knew what that meant all along. I just never saw a place to sneak it into a thread. I bet he got the idea from Mike Oldfield's, Tubular Bells album!

I tellya... I like what the vocals and hardpanned gtrs are doing in this mix. The bass is better. But that snare drum... hmm... really small sounding, with some odd 'verb on it... at this point, the mix sounds pretty good ... with the odd exception of the thin snare and its accompanying "echo".

Something with some good meat and a nice ring would sound better (imo)... if you can get over the snare-thing, this would jump up in quality quite a bit...

What are you using for drums? There are some relatively cheap snare samples that are pretty good at wizoosounds.com ... available in many sampler platforms.
