You probably could sync them up somehow, if you think you'll need more than 24 tracks.

I have the original 2488 (not NEO) and I love it. Don't use it any more, but it's still in my closet just in case.:D

In your closet huh....yeah I have a Tascam MSR24S in my closet, "just in case" haha but hey ya wanna do some trading?? Id love to have that first generation 2488!?!?

would gladly give it to you for free, but I don't think you want it. The Jog wheel has cost me a few hairs on my head since it turns pretty much in the direction it feels like, and I had to use a srewdriver to work the PLAY and STOP buttons. It's really the only reason I stopped using it. Love the machine, but the hardware didn't last as long as the electronics.

In your opinion , do you think the newer version(Mark II or NEO) has ironed out these issues??

I wish Boss BR600s were moving so fast, I've got mine up for the 2nd week in a row.

The 2488 neo mkii (or whatever the last one was) is now no longer updated. They are likely selling on ebay because Tascam released the DP-24, which is essentially a 2488 that uses sd card memory instead of a hard drive. There are other fairly significant differences, but that's a large one. The DP-24 still lets you record 8 tracks simultaneously, and will play back 24 simultaneously. I think one other major difference is how virtual tracks work in the system.

I wonder if the hassle of syncing two machines is worth it when you can record 22 tracks, do a scratch bounce to a stereo track, and record 22 more tracks against it. Since I mix on a pc, that process works fine since anything recorded against the bounce mix will still be sync'd to the first 22 tracks not assigned to any faders.

I bought the NEO for the very reason that it has a built in hard drive(80-160) GB so that I dont have to use computer are sd cards.

You can always use the DP-24 the same way you would've used the 2488. The SD cards are actually preferable from the standpoint that a mechanical hard drive is more likely to fail (due to having moving parts and the simple fact that a good whack will destroy a lot of them).

Trust me bro. Im an old Tascam man and Im very gentle with my equipment and I can make records on anything!! I do not beleive that the hard drives are anymore unstable in the 2488s than a home computer.I will have to learn about backing up WAV files and all that shit soon because I was brought up with reel to reels and everything was already stored on tape!! I dont like the idea of sitting in front of a computer all day long when creating music ....thats me and to each his own.I have the lil baby brother to the NEO (DP-02) and its so stable its unbeleivable. But more than that said....IT SOUNDS AWESOME !!!:D

I love my 2488 neo. It does everything I need it to. Although I do get a little envious every time I see the color screen of the DP24.

So far as I know, you cannot sync up 2488s. But I've never tried to, so what do I know.

So you are saying that the hard drives in a digital recorder like the 2488 is less stable than DAW's as ya'll put it??

Really,Im very ignorant to what a "hard drive" is.....does it spin??? Is a hard drive in a digital recorder the same as inside of a computer??

The hard drive is the same as a computer hard drive. It is not more likely to fail than a computer drive. The only thing I would watch out for is excessive vibration caused by the music if say you were recording a live show with large PA system (subs). This also applies to people using computers at gigs. It is true that SD cards are more stable due to them not being effected by vibration, but if you look after the 2488 at the gig and during transport there won't be a problem.

Cheers
Alan.

P.S. a hard drive does spin, look, don't try this at home.
