The wife & I decided to rip out the carpet in the living room.

CLAP, CLAP

A bit of sound reflection there.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

GET THE GUILD !!!!!

The guitar sounds kinda cool, a little brighter, louder, a tiny bit more ambiance.

OK....

Hold the flames, I know perfectly well that this room is no good for
recording the way it is,

BUT,

it does peak a question;

What are the requirements and/or how does one build a LIVE ROOM ?

What you need is diffusion of the sound.This is acheived by using non parallel walls and diffuse surfaces.

check out the different ways of achieving diffuse walls by going to:

http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html

and click on acoustics, then diffusers.

Some designers add low frequency absorption by building bass traps behind the diffuse walls. I personally don't recommend it.

What about the poor man's solution of putting in floor to ceiling bookcases filled with different sized books? Between thrift stores and yard sales, you can find all sorts of cheap books by the pound.

That way you don't have to (shudder!) read them or anything.
