So i just broke my monitors that i found in a carboot sale for £15. I need some advice on ACTIVE monitors for around £150. I was looking at some samson Resolv 50a Active Monitors and im wondering if they are anygood. I could pissibly stretch to Alesis M1 Active 520 monitors. I also saw some M Audio Studiopro 4 monitors for slightly cheaper but im not sure if they would be any good. Any advice would be nice... Thankks

Don't get the Samson or the m-audio ones. Get a pair of KRK RP5's. you will like the sound. nice monitors for doing rock music.

In t hat A/B/C comparisions , I suggest to stay way from this resolv 50.To me sounds harsh and fatigue in highs.
This 4" M audio(that I don´t know) probably will lacks in low response.
Alesis are related as "hyped" monitors" (I agree, but I know the old model, not sure this "520" is too)

Tapco 5" could be a good choice, very good reviews.

They are more like desktop speakers. Honestly man, i would save up for better monitors. ATLEAST the KRK RP5's.

i cant find anywhere in england that sells them. On the internet any way. actually i just found some on ebay. but its £229. How about the alesis m1 actve 520. There is a sale on where i can get them for £180?

I'm not sure about that. You will be better off going to dolphinmusic.co.ok and buying a pair of monitors from there.

im familier with that website. I think imuso has the best prices for a UK dealer. I am now looking at tapco s5. Do you know anything about them. I dont need really load monitors or anything. i just want them to 'make the music sound as it does" i.e. not biased to high or low frequencys as i know thats what speakers do. Thanks

Well, i personally never heard any of the tapco monitors. but so far, people are not really liking them. try the m-audio BX5a's. they are pretty decent.

okay thankyou

Breeza:

Any thing with 4" will blame in lows.
(My opinion).

Krk 5" (don´t know)
M audio 5"
Yamaha 5"
tapco 5"

Are better and the "minimum" options, or......

The sistem 4" of m audio , but ... with SUB (who knows?)

And a "good" example of waste of money in monitors can be the Yamahas
Msp3
Very "thin" response , with flat frequencies (really) beggining at.. hum... maybe 200hz?
(interesting that in a lot of cases (not all) they market these gears as (ex.): frequency response "50 Hz -22 Khz").
(they only don´t tell you that in 50hz, frequencies are almost inaudible).

sounds like the ns10...except for the flat part.

i used the powered alesis jobs for a tracking date. these here:

http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=27

i was impressed. good midrange and top detail. totally useable. i own and mainly use dynaudio 6a's...the mids on those aren't as detailed or poked out...i may actually pick up a pair of the alesis's.

Hi, Big Toe
(how about lows? I hear many people talk about "hyped", or too much lows in this alesis)(altough we know untreated room can be the the real problem...)
I will pay more attention in alesis (6 years ago, mixing in a studio, the NS 10 brokes and engineer comes with a pair of alesis that we use in 2 or 3 sections, but they sound very bad and without defitinition in mids).
But ...we are in 2006,and if you´re comparing with the dynaudio  , this model certainly rocks...

hey -

they aren't bad in the lows...i mean for a bookshelf speaker...i didn't have much a problem figuring out what was going on.

i dunno...they worked for me. plenty of definition in the mids...i dunno how accurate but defintaly gave you a decent idea of what was happening there in an ns10 way.

the control room i was in was about 8X6...it smelled like man. you learn to work where you work whatever the room and monitors...just do it.
