These were recorded on a Zoom R16 with various dynamic mics: SM57s, 58s for vocals, an SM57 knockoff for guitar, and an EV RE15 on banjo.

Take Me In Your Lifeboat

Dig a Hole in the Meadow
This is a quick headphone mix, but I need to go back in and work on the balance and levels. Still, I am happy enough to share.

Listening on open spkrs and it sounds damn fine to me.

Bass on Dig a Hole could be a tad louder.

Nashville eh?

Hey from Louisville.

Very nice indeed - excellent performances and Take Me In Your Lifeboat sounds good to go as is. I think Dig a Hole just needs the banjo part taming a little - maybe a little off the upper mids. I like these two a lot

Thanks guys. I am going to work on both a little...especially Dig a Hole. Much obliged.

Wow! Real authentic b'grass! Great playing and singing all around. Love the recorded sound of the banjo...and the playing is great, too.

In fact, I could swear this is Bill Emmerson's band....and his hands, on the banjo.

Is it? Are you?

ps. What was the distance from the mic to the banjo? [Lifeboat]

I am not Bill, but that sure made my day.:D

Distance from the mic to the banjo was less than 12", but I did not pay close attention. It was pointed toward the middle of the head and under where my hand rests. There is a mix of the RE15 and banjo bleed on the 57 that was my vocal mic.

This is great stuff. Some of the best banjo playing I've heard in a long, long time. More please.

How'd you record the upright bass. I've got one coming in, and I've never recorded one before. Tips?

Ii used an sm57 pointed at the f hole on this but a SDC would have been better. If your bass player moves around wrap the mic in a towel and stuff it under the tailpiece pointed up toward the bridge. If you want a more detailed sound try a second mic pointed where the neck meets the body.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give your ideas a whirl.
