Here's something different than what I posted last time. This is a sax ballad I've been working on. Not really ready but I wanted to get some feedback before fooling with it further.
It's "A Sax Ballad", at:

Kenny G move over!

Man this is cool!

Forget about any issues with recording!

You rule dude!

I actually FEEL the music.....that is what makes it good to me...ya know?

Superb horn blowing....for sure!

Rock on man!

man,

I like the sound of that sax. It reminds me of the brightness that kenny G got on his "faith" album.

I listened at low levels for a minute then I switched to headphones so as not to disturb neighbors, so I cant really tell you much about the mix.

from the little time I had on montors, I think its a great mix and just about there.

I was wanting to hear the piano(rhodes?) in wide stereo.
Also, I like the room you had on the sax, but I think you should put more, for that creamy sound.

Nice job man!

funk on!

Thanks Cyanjaguar. Yeah I wondered about the effects. I had done two mixes, one with substantially more room sound. I'm gonna fool around with that some more.

Great Job Lt. Bob!

very sweet... If I was forced to find something I wasn't crazy about, it would maybe be the string sounds you chose.... but that's really being critical...this is a really fine piece...

Two thumbs up!!

Cool tune Lt.!

Great blowing, and really nice arrangement. I didn't care for the "choir" (is that what it is?) synth patch, and prefered the Rhodes, but the tune is superb, no question about it.
What did you use to do the drums? I'm guessing they're no realy, but they sound really nice.

Holy Shit! Fat city my friend. Very, very nice.

Very nice. I like the composition and the playing. I'm never a fan of synthetic sounds and I'd have preferred to hear it just as a sax/rhodes duet, but that's just me and I tend to be a purist. I didn't care for the way the sax swung from one side of the mix to the other. I'm assuming that it's one player simulating two parts but I'd have preferred if the sax just changed tone and dynamics and stayed in the middle. It would have sounded a lot more natural that way.

And despite my nitpicking, I really liked it a lot.

Killer sax tunage dude! The only thing that I didnt like was the shift in the mix when you threw the sax to the other side.On this type of music the ear is locked in to the lead instrument from the original location it started at.Other than that it's a nice melodic tune.

Good job!

Whoa!!!! That is not my kinda jazz, but that sure is some fancy playing there dude!!! Jee... You are better as me. Maybe even smarter. :D

Some comments: nothing to say on the playing. Really cool.

The sax overdub doesn't really work. You should try it with a different tone, maybe on a tenor or something. They don't differ enough. Don't think it really needs that dual there, really. It would be stronger with one line, maybe change register or something? That glissando (or whatever they call that fast scale) might even be enough to make it differ from the rest of the piece...

The accompaignent might be more complex too. Some fancy chords (more 9ths, 11...), some reharmonizations in between (just simple secondary V's or diuminished chords would do, maybe a sus chord) on that rhodes would really add to the jazzy feel, mqke it more interesting. The synth didn't bother me all that much, it is too much up front however. It doesn't really need it either....

You got a score on that? I really like the way the progressions modulates every now and then.

Nice growling too. I dig growling... Just got how to do it right. Playing with earplugs makes it easier to learn. You hardly hear the sax over your voice though. :D

Ok, now I get to listen loud. Its nice. I still think the lead needs more room.

the 1/16ths hi hats sound a little too busy for the piece. I think 8ths might work better.

Thanks to everyone, I have come to respect and like the people here and it makes me feel so good to have you like my playing. :D :D :D
Now, on to the objections. I'm gonna have to go this piece over from scratch since this was the last thing I did with my ADAT before I sold it to get my Fostex so no further mixing is possible 'cause I don't have it anymore but I'm gonna redo it and incorporate all of your suggestions. The panning was my idea of experimentation and was universally disliked, (as was my megaphone voice on The Days). No more experimental stuff for me. I'm just gonna try to get as true a representation of the actual instruments as possible next time and on this tune I think I'll go with a more sparse mix of instruments. Maybe just a rhodes and guitar.
And Aren asked about the drums. Everything on the mix except the sax is a Roland XP-60. Drums, bass, vox, the whole thing. Sax is the only real instrument on there, all alto.
Guys, I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions. I will make these changes and see what happens. If something good comes out of it, it will be all our song. ;)

Kick ass!

Can't evaluate the mix honestly, ears are still shot (but getting better, n's don't sound like m's any more).

But hey, maybe I can get you to do one of the intros for my radio/talk show sometime ;)

I'd love to Waldo. And everyone else, if there's anything of yours you've wondered what sax would sound like on, let me know and I'd be glad to put it on there. Absolutely free, free, free! :D

I am saluting you, LT. .....that is absolutely positively kick ass music!!!!! i agree about the panning issue and the stereo keys but thats minor....great job.....

Excellent playing, i really love the mood! The synth sound was definitely a bit iffy but on the whole it fitted in ok. Nice :)

Very nice gettin laid song! Gonna empty my nutsack a few times with this fer shure! Sweeet.

Thanks Tim, I appreciate it. What do you play, alto or tenor or both? And how's the weather in my dream state?

Thanks to Gidge and Jags also. Hey Gidge, tomorrow night (fri) at the Argosy.

Charva, she may be emptying you, but she'll be thinking me. :D :D :D
