i have a digi001 and i want to mix on an anolog board instead of in the box... I want to run 16 channels output to this and hopefully the same back into my digi001 ( i know im running 8 channels from adat so i can have a total of 16 on my digi001). Will the mixwizzard 16-2 allen heath board work for me im a little confused looks like it has 16 inputs and outputs. Do i need direct outputs?? i would like to use the preamps from board to also to record (hopefully 16 preamps). I have searched awile for mixingboards and i really want a more colored sound ( i think the talk was on preamp end) vs sqeaky clean something to give my mixes a little character... Anyway i am pretty new still but any info would be great thanks.

Yes, the MixWix 16:2 will work for that. It has direct outs on every channel that are internally switchable pre/post fader and EQ. In your case I'd think you'd want post-fader post-EQ which I *believe* is the default. You do need the direct outs if you want to record 16 tracks at a time.

You can then use the 16 outs from your PC to the MixWiz to do an analog mixdown. The MixWiz lacks subgroups, so if you like those for mixing, you'll be a little disappointed, but the aux sends serve the same function, but with more work on your part. If you have recorded more than 16 tracks, of course you will need to submix to 16 in the box.

One thing to check on v3 is whether the line in and mic in can be used together--there is a -30dB pad switch for the line in, but having both physically plugged in doesn't work on the v2 I have. Somewhat of a nuisance to go from tracking to dubbing to mixdown and having to repatch things all the time.

Finally, the onboard effects are fairly useless, so don't get your hopes up there.

All in all, a nice board that I like a lot. I don't do analog mixdowns though, just live shows with the direct outs feeding an HD24. Works great for me!

ok

now does the v2 to v3 vary in sound diffrance are the older ones beter?? Please any more help from anyone would be great. Does this board give up some good sounds? I just sold a rnp preamp which i like....... but i really wana mix with my hands before my mouse goes through my computer screen heheheheheehe :D please any info on other mixingboards that will add life to mixes and have good preamps!!! i really dont want a mackie and i have about 600 to spend at the most.... i was looking used if possible to try and get more for my money :) !!!!!

I suspect the RNP should be better, it's quite a bit more expensive per channel.

v3 is supposed to be a little nicer than v2 although I don't know the exact circuit difference. It does have some improved features apart from the preamps. I have v2 and it's fine so if you're looking used you might be able to find one for that, although I think ~$800 might be more typical.

Either version will sound just fine, but the newest version has started incorporating stuff from the ML series as opposed to the GL series. I can say for sure (at least in mine and almost everyone else's opinion that has tried both) that the ML preamp and EQ sounds MUCH better than the GL, which wasn't bad, just not that exciting is all. Personally, I like the Mixwiz sound just about as much as the RNP. They are actually pretty similar in tonality. Factor in the EQ on a Mix Wiz and that makes it a MUCH better value in my opinion.

Mshilarious, I agree about the Mixwiz FX. Pretty cheezy to say the least. One thing I have found though.... Give the FX editor software a try. It seems to really change the way the onboard FX feel and seems to offer them much greater usability. What I found is that the FX engine itself was not near as bad as I thought, just the presets were. It still isn't stellar by any means, but at least it can become useful:)

Any presets you care to share :D

Seriously, maybe we should set up an effects swap club. I like the general idea of each preset, just not the sound :(

Ooh I just d/l that software--I didn't know it had an onboard compressor! Interesting. Can't figure out how to route that using an aux send though

Edit: hmmm, thinking out loud, I could cut the gain down -12dB, set aux 5 send & master at +6dB. The Aux 5 return would go to L-R for main outs and Aux 1-2 for monitors as needed, and the overall level into the compressor is still controlled with the channel fader. That would also give me 12dB of peak protection on the direct outs for recording. However, if I did that with 2 channels using Aux 5 & 6, I'd lose the ability to set independent monitor levels for those channels.

Kind of cheesy, but hey, free compressor!

I see there's a vocoder too
