Rap and hip hop is not the music I deal with, but if it's sonically new and lush with layers, I can really get into it (Dr. Octagon, DJ Spooky, the first Cypress Hill, Paul's Boutique, De La and Tribe...blah blah blah).
Here is a great tip that will make your beats stand way the fuck out. This will work with all drum machines, but I like it best with old analog cheapie drum/rhythm machines.
Take the line out of the drum machine and put it through a shitload of guitar effects. You can use a POD or an alesis Ineko (every beat man should have one and it's only like $99) or any multi effects units. You can also just use a bunch of stompboxes like a whammy wah, delay, flanger...etc.....
With just some reverb distortion delay, the lamest mambo or polka beat becomes this huge ass fat beat that sounds nothing like the original. You wont believe how cool it sounds. A lot of those crappy analog drum machines from the 60's and 70's have a real deep low end that really gets more pronounced by the effct pedals.
Now, here is where it gets really cool. Some have two lines out, or you can use splitter or two channel mixer for this. If you take that original lame analogue beat and put it through two separate effect loops and then into stereo ins on your recorder you will get the most rich and lush beat you ever imagined. By panning and using the right set of effects in both chains, this stereo combination becomes downright awe inspiring.
The only drawback to this is that a lot of old analogue drum machines are not perfect in keeping time. You might want to loop the best parts if you want to sync these new weird beats with a digital drum machine.
