A few questions - drums, compression, us-428

ok, i record drums at home, and will compression make them sound alot better? i've heard it makes them punchy but havent tried any compression yet. and, has anyone tried the us-428 by tascam. its like a desktop midi, digital audio controller with 8 faders, eq, among other things.
