A disillusioned VJ observation

194db spl. That is the theoretical limit for what you can do in the earths atmosphere.

((X)) used to go off like that all the time.

No wonder my hearing is fucked.:(

I could have used a 10,000W attentuater when she was around.........

I still feel like it is soft enough that you could easily put a bunch of blankets on the speaker and it wouldn't wake anyone up but I don't know your situation.

Tell ya' what ..... since I was one of the guys that told you it was soft and since you bought it back when they were $99, if it's unusable for you, I'll take it off your hands. I wouldn't mind having one to mod.
There, hows that? You can't beat that for taking care of your concerns!
:)
Just PM me if that's what you decide to do and I'll get the money together forthwith.

Well, I am supposed to be trading Travis one for his Epi SG. I was just going to have MF send him one when the guitar's ready, but I might just send him mine instead.

I'll see if I can't borrow a cab somewhere and try the blanket thing or something similar. I guess being a separate cab, blankets won't overheat the head.

Hey, Arvo, can I borrow a cab? :D

If I could pin down where Slowrider is...

Or, Lt., if you've got anything you want to trade...

I guess I could put it up in the 'For Sale' forum, if I were so inclined, to see if anybody wanted to trade.

I need to hear that new Fender combo first.

Try the blankets ..... if you need softer than that the Fender's not gonna be soft enough. You're gonna have to look at one of those 1/2 watt things.

yeah, i hate to say it, but if a 5W amp is too loud, you need to be looking at one of the 1/2W or 1W amps......but even they might be too loud b/c of the way the wattage scale works.

honestly, if the VJ is too loud for you, you probably need to be using a pod or something instead.

i don't find my VJ to be overly loud when plugged into a single speaker, in fact it's just about "just right". plugged into a 4x10, though, it absolutely screams--it could probably hang with a drummer. of course, i live in a house in the country and the studio's in the basement. i've had Fender Twins and JC120's in there before and no one's complained (except my ears).

ANY amp would be "too much" if i lived in an apartment.....

I think playing with different speaker sizes AND efficiencies might help you out. I have two cabs - one has an 8" and the other a 12". The 12" is LOUD, but the 8" gives me a decent sound with very nice break up without peeling paint off the walls.

What kind of 8", and what impedance?

An 8 was actually what I was initially going to go for.

And then maybe some others for a bit of a different flavor.

I wouldn't bank on 8"'s being that much more quiet. If you want quiet from an amp you'll either need solidstate or get a POD. If you would've read any of my posts on the VJ you'll see me state that ,it's still pretty damn loud, several times.

Ok, don't give me any trouble for this, but it's an 8" Johnson

It's 8 ohms and in a small front-ported cab I made. I believe the speaker might be manufactured by Celestion (but not 100% sure).

My cab might look small, but it's got an 8" Johnson!

I remember being a guitar shop when some clerk tried to get me to hold his nasty purple Johnson.:D

already been there done that with the valve junior head/cab. the little f*%$er was way too loud for my needs. there's no way in hell i could use it in hotel rooms or for late night playing at home. i considered an attenuator but for my needs i would have to use heavy attenuation. i've been told that heavy attenuation sounds like crap so what's the point? i had to return the vj head/cab and submit to modeling amp hell for the time being. too bad cause the little sucker sounded fairly good for dirty rock n roll stuff.

btw, don't worry about trading anything for the epi sg. it's yours as soon as i get some time back home to fiddle around with it (i don't know when that will be yet!).

hey travis-- i've heard that the lovepedal 1/2 watt amps are pretty good (they can also run like distortion pedals i believe). i see them go cheaply on ebay occasionally-- might be good for your needs.

i've used my VJ with the 8in speaker i've got in my Fender Champ. It's a Weber Alnico 8A125. it definitely can get loud. but it's a manageable kind of loud. ;)

it records beautifully.

Hey, what impedance is that 8 in your Champ?

A guy at GC recommended

I check out a ZVEX Nano Amp.

I haven't had the opportunity to look it up yet, but he claims it the swizzle stick, or whatever it is you kids say these days.

And Travis, I'll trade you something, you just gotta tell me what you want.

I can't think of anyting I've got that I want to get rid of besides potentially the VJ (at least nothing in the realm of an even trade), so you'll just have to pick something you want.

Come to think of it

I've still got that Shure bass drum mic of Metalhead28's. :D

how about this? you think of something that you don't mind letting go of (maybe the valve junior?) and we'll make up some silly contest here and give it away as the prize.
