A disillusioned VJ observation

I've got a bone to pick with you guys.

I've still got a VJ head in the box, untested, 'cause I don't have a cab.

So I go to the GC that has the VJ cab (1-12")in stock to demo it.

That thing is freakin' loud!

I'm gonna call the local amp guys to see what I can do, but I just thought I should tell somebody.

Yeah, you're definitely not going to be having a conversation with someone with that thing blaring. 5 class A watts through a 1x12 is going to be pretty loud, still better than an AC30 at full tilt, but loud none-the-less.

What were you led to believe? IIRC, a tenfold increase in power yields a doubling in volume, so a 5 watt amp should be half as loud as a 50 watt one.
 
If you look at the speaker efficiency, that decibel rating is 1 watt at 1 meter. So an efficiency of 90db will put out 90db spl being fed 1 watt at a distance of 1 meter.

So a 50 watt amp will put out, hmmm, lemme see.... 4500 dB. Yeah, that sounds about right. ;^)

No, it doesn't work like that. The watt/db spl relationship is not linear. (obviously)
 
So are there any

good sounding speakers that are so grossly inefficient as to significantly cut the volume on this thing?

Any good 1 watt/ half watt amps that don't cost an arm and a leg?

Have you considered some type of power soak?

Yeah, I've asked about those repeatedly. The VJ was supposed to be something I would not need one on, though.

If I were going to use a power soak/brake/attenuator thing, then I would just use it on my Vibro Champ, maybe get a Marshall or Mesa head, too.
 
I still feel like it is soft enough that you could easily put a bunch of blankets on the speaker and it wouldn't wake anyone up but I don't know your situation.

Tell ya' what ..... since I was one of the guys that told you it was soft and since you bought it back when they were $99, if it's unusable for you, I'll take it off your hands. I wouldn't mind having one to mod.
