Hi people,
I've just posted a new tune called "More" to:

www.nowhereradio.com/dres

This is a song in it's infancy and I'm inviting you to help me make it grow. It's a tune I've written recently and I still like it after 2 weeks so I think it is worthy of more attention.

What I'm asking for is advice on what you imagine would go well with the basic foundation, instruments ? style ? sound ? effects? As it is it's very raw, no effects, just voice and guitar recorded 'live'. I tried to catch the energy of the raw song ... I think it's a fun tune, I hope it sparks some ideas. Of course I have my own ideas but I'm very open to suggestion at this stage of the project.

Man, so many strong writers on here, and you're one of 'em.
I could hear bass definitely, and vocal harmonies. Maybe even shakers, handclaps instead of drums. I don't know if you'd want to heavy this song up with drums, it's more of a handclapper to me. Drums would make it bigger, just don't know if it needs to get bigger...it's got good movement as is with what the guitar's doing, so a little percussion might go a long way.
As for sound, the live vibe is cool, you might want to keep that feeling going.
The style has a bit of Van Morrison feel to it, which is A+ in my book.
Very good writing, strong singing...good recipe!

I'm listening as I'm typing and this is a very catchy tune. The foundation is strong enough to do whatever you want with it. Mark's comments are interesting as I didn't think of leaving it with such a light treatment but I can see where he's comming from and the song has a good rhythmic hook.
Personally I would use the bass to punctuate and i would put drums on it, just hi-hat on 2 and 4 though till 0:47 when the first pattern comes around again when I'd go for the full kit. I dont think I'd do too much keyboards maybe a little hammon organ thing but quite sparse maybe a bit more in the bridge around 2:00.
I think the dynamic affect of dropping the drums and bass in and out would work well as the guitar carries it. I like the looseness of the live sound and whatever you do I think that you should try to keep that element

Damn good song

dres,

Great song! Great playing and great lyrics. The only thing I don't care for much is that I can "hear" the mic....if that makes any sense!? Maybe it's too "dry"? I donno....I can't quite put my finger on it.

Nice job though.....
RF

oops....I just read the whole thread :o

It's cool in the "raw" regard but the hearing the mic thing won't let me go. ;)

good song

very catchy indeed, i want to hear this when it's finished!!:p

i think a light drum line with a rim shot snare untill the chorus, then whail on those puppie's!!! tambourine?? shaker?? in the back. and of course a acoustic lead somewhere. and what the other guy's said:D

can't wait to hear the finished version!!

thank's man

peace

Thanks people for your comments, it's very encouraging. Any more ideas, keep it coming. I'm glad people like the song .. it's good fun to play :)

mkg: Thanks for your comments. Yeah handclaps might be cool... would never have thought of that by myself !

Matt303: Punchy, punctuating bass ... yes I agree... any ideas on the bass sound I should use ? Hammond organ .. now there's a challenge ! but I agree... I think I can find something suitable.

rushfan33: I've learnt through trial and error that I simply must record vocal and guitar at the same time... retracking the lead just isn't the same. You could be hearing the guitar bleed into the vocal mic ? (big problem - any suggestions? ) maybe that's the mic sound your hearing ? Either that or a little distortion.. the levels were high.. maybe not enough headroom. The room I'm in is very dead... I might try recording it somewhere else.

fenderlikinggood: rim shot sounds good... tamborines definately... now I have an excuse to buy one ;)

I think with the "typical" band backup, you'll have a fairly decent, catchy pop tune. If you can come up with a unique bass part (Beatles "come together" is an example), a nice "Emeric" drum sound, and a snazzy rhy gtr...recorded reeeeaally fine...and don't forget the three chick background singers...

otherwise...it is kinda hitting me as a good "coffeehouse" kinda song. Needs the killer item to put this one on the charts...either fancy smancy production, killer vocals, New York slick, sing along chorus...or none of the above;)

Well... I've listened to this a couple times.. and I don't really have anything constructive to say aboot it..

but...

lest the "posting police" give me a citation for "listening without a post".. I figured I'd say something... ;) :D :p

so seriously.. this is a cool tune.. and I think it definitely needs drums.. (but that could just be cause I'm a drummer  ) I could put some nifty stuff to this tune.. (if I had a mic'ed set layin' around somewhere :p ) and I think it's got good potential. (sounded fine as-is, but a full band would make it a really "rockin" song)

WATYF

mixmkr: Not sure what "Emeric" drums are ? but as far as coffeehouse idea goes, how about some atmospheric stereo recordings of a real coffeehouse to blend in.. "Virtually live" kinda thing ?

WATYF: your welcome to lay a drum pattern down for me. I'd appreciate some fresh ideas... something simple and rough I can record myself, post an MP3 maybe, not polished just some knee slaps to get the pattern across ? Trouble is I always do the same kinda thing...it would be good to get some fresh input.

dres,

Very strong performance!! Nice keeping of the rythm.

I think it will be up to you where this goes, the obvious drums, bass, but maybe just maybe bagpipes, smoke em if you have em!!

Great work, and nice recording.

Sounds cool!
I like your vocal energy,great!

I hear the intro first time just the acoustic, second time some light drums and bass.
For the second part mabey add electric guitar and build up to the chorus.
Then back to the acoustic.

Just some thoughts.

Good start!

Best to you,
Pete

As far as what I'd imagine going good with the basic (very solid, soulful and powerful !!:)) foundation. I think one of the cold stops towards the end would sound cool if brought down to vocals and hand claps and then brought back up to the full band useing an entire "community" of backup vocals to go along with yours. Full, diverse and energetic like.

That's what popped into my mellon.

Nice song dude,
Have fun beefing up the bones!!

Theron.

Its a great song, I am enjoying the sparce arangement so much that I would hate to see it cluttered up with too much. I think some drums played with brushes and a standup bass would sound cool and keep all the great elements of the sound shining thru.

GT: Thanks for your comments... I'm not sure about bagpipes ! certainly lateral thinking !

muzeman: I'm slowly learining that energy is essential. Heard a great workshop once that talked about the balance between energy attitude and space. I think I've got energy and attitude... may need to work on the space. At least I have a friend who plays electric.

theron: Good suggestion about the community singing at the end, I think I could find a collection of OK singers at church. Would be fun.

Kind Elvis: You really hit the nail on the head there... I agree entirely. What happens when I write these songs is because it's just me and guitar I really try and fill it out. Concequently there isn't much room for other stuff. However I'm sure I can squeeze bass and light drums in.

Lt. Bob: I was thinking of you and your sax when I posted this... please have a go.. I'd be honoured to have you as a collaborator.

After reading the suggestion I would have to agree, Sax would sound just fine on there. Lt. Bob, you should give it a go!!

Your actions are being monitored WATYF.. :D

Yeah I think this is screaming for drums and the basic band behind it..

Let's not rule out the sax! :D

a good song...

I like this idea that your building these songs on this BBS... it's the modern hippie thing.

:D Riku

OK I've printed out all the replies and since most of the advice was pritty good I'm going to endevour to follow as much as possible.

WATYF and Lt. Bob : looks like your your going to collaborate on this one ??. I'm going to try and record it again but that performance was one of those magic first takes... I may not be able to do any better. Regardless you can start practicing to the existing track. PM me if this is OK ?

Thanks people ! :)
