A Delta card with another S/PDIF card?

hi, all

I just bought a Delta 44(4x4 analog in/out), and was wonderig if I can gain more tracks by adding another PCI card that will playback&record S/PDIF signals alone with Delta 44 at the same time. If so, this is what I am thinking about doing, please tell me if this will work:

After done tracking, send the dry tracks from Sonar to outboard effects boxes via Delta44 and S/PDIF, do some real-time tweaking/mixing, than re-record them. I know there will be quality loose during A/D/A/D, but I want to do this so i can use the outboard processors during mix down. Doable?

if doable, can you recommend some cards that will work with Delta44 and provide S/PDIF in/out?

Thank you

AL

Shouldn't be any problem except:

You need a way to sync the word clock of both cards if you will used them together for audio. I don't know if the 44 has word clock in. The other card would need it too.

Some cards have a way to sync two of the same cards together via a jumper cable inside your box.

I recommend trading the Delta44 on a Delta66. Considering the cost of a decent SPDIF interface, you'll probably come out ahead, and won't have to worry about synch issues.

The delta44 does not have external clock support.

thanks, Ed and Slackmaster:

Ok, lets say I don't expect them to record at the same time, how about having Delta44 to do the play back and have another card (maybe Audiophile) do the tracking? Do I still need a clock of some kind?

I would like to have delta66, but, at mars' 30% discount, i had to get 44 since that's all they had

Yes you would technically need a clock, which won't work with either of those cards. It is possible to get lucky and their clocks won't drift much, but it's risky.

Sell your Delta44 for $180 on ebay and put that towards a new or used Delta66. I think you'll come out cheaper than the 44 + an audiophile, and it'll work right....in fact it's designed to do exactly what you want it to do!

Otherwise, what you want to do is possible, but it's simply not something that anybody can recommend as being the best solution.
